Onidi: “I want to be ready for Oschersleben AutoGP”

Fabio Onidi is charged up and ready for a quick recovery. The Lazarus driver, who suffered a displaced fracture of his right hand’s metacarpus after a race incident, had a successful surgery on Tuesday and already started a rehabilitation program that will be as intense as possible. While in the hours after the accident a lightning-quick recovery in order to be ready for the Oschersleben round seemed unlikely, after the surgery Fabio and his staff decided to try it anyway. Even if he knows that he won’t be in his best shape, Onidi decided that he will do everything he can to race in Germany.“Doctors told us that recovering enough to be able to drive was possible, so I decided to try. Obviously I know that in any case I won’t be in the best condition but I think that being there, even if just at seventy-eighty percent of my usual shape, will be better than missing the whole event. Bad luck already left his mark in my classification, so I decided that misfortune won’t have an easy win this time”.Fabio speaks about the accident that led to the injury.“It was a race contact, like many that can be seen at every weekend and like some others I had throughout my career, but I never had such consequences. Everything happened very quickly so I don’t know what happened between my hand and the steering wheel. What I think is that the hand got stuck for a little moment between the cockpit and the dashboard, which unfortunately is the hardest part of the wheel. This supposedly caused the fracture”.You didn’t realize immediately how bad the injury was… “I had pain, but frankly I thought that it was just a consequence of the hand bashing, nothing more than a contusion or a twist. Then, as seconds passed, pain increased until I couldn’t hold the wheel anymore. That’s why I lost the car, in the quicker part of the track…”.With the surgery being successful, now it’s time for rehabilitation.“Surgery lasted around 90 minutes, they inserted in my hand a plate with seven screws to hold together the fragments of the fracture, that was pretty broad as it took a diagonal path. Rehab is made of physiotherapy, that I started immediately the day after, in order to speed-up my recovery. Obviously it brings some pain with it, but thanks to will power and pain killers I can handle it. If I will be able to drive in Germany, it will be worth it”.
