A large field of exotic GT sports cars is expected to make the journey to the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit for round five of the Vodka O Australian GT Championship this coming September 2-4.
Over twenty entries have expressed interest in racing at the famed seaside circuit with two one hour races scheduled for the weekend.
SPHERIX'S Craig Denyer, the new Category Manager for the GT Championship, believes the longer format is better suited to the cars.
"The longer races certainly appeal to the competitors more than the sprint type races, and that is why we've had more drivers indicate they will be there in September." he said.
"Drivers can either bring in a co-driver for the event, or elect to drive each one hour race on their own."
"The Vodka O Australian GT Championship is here to stay and with new cars, great race formats, and a stable parity system moving forward, I expect the category to go from strength to strength."
"We would like to finalise our plans on regulations and eligibility for 2012 nice and early, so everyone can plan for the future with confidence knowing that once they make a commitment, the rules will be consistent and stable."
Vodka O pilot Dean Grant's Mosler MT900 will make a welcome return to the Championship after undergoing six months of extensive repairs following a massive accident at this year's Armor All Bathurst 12 Hour, which Grant said was by far the biggest shunt of his career.
"The car had a mechanical failure at more than 300km an hour down Conrod Straight, and I can tell you it did a massive amount of damage," he said.
"We've spent an enormous amount of time and money repairing the Mosler, and I can't wait to roll out of pit lane for the first time and really get acquainted with it again."
"Phillip Island should really suit the car with its long radius corners and of course Gardner Straight, which gives me a chance to really open her up."
The Phillip Island round will feature some of the world's most exotic race cars including the Mercedes Benz SLS AMG GT3, the Mosler MT900, Porsche Cup S, Aston Martin DBSR9, Lotus Exige GT3 and Dodge Viper GT3 just to name a few.
Racing for support categories will begin on Saturday the third of September, while the GT cars will feature in two 1 hour races on Sunday the fourth of September.
The Vodka O Australian GT Championship is a National motor racing series pitting some of the world's most exotic and exciting race cars against each other in a mix of sprint and endurance race formats on some of Australia's most challenging circuits including Mt Panorama Bathurst, the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit and the Adelaide Parklands street circuit for the Clipsal 500
