Rounds 19, 20, 21: Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium, 30/31 July
The biggest international Formula 3 field of the season provided a weekend of thrilling races at Spa-Francorchamps, with contenders from the FIA Formula 3 International Trophy joining their Cooper Tires British Formula 3 International Series colleagues at the Belgian Grand Prix circuit to swell the grid to 28.
The first of Saturday’s races was won in convincing style by Roberto Merhi for the Prema Powerteam, the Spaniard pursued home by Fortec’s Will Buller, who claimed the British F3 victory. The 20-minute sprint went the way of Carlin’s Kevin Magnussen who, like Merhi, led from pole position to chequered flag.
On Sunday, Merhi repeated his superb form to lead the 40-minute epic from pole position to chequered flag, but the undoubted star of the show was Ulsterman Will Buller. The Team UK driver battled up the order to third place overall to claim top British F3 honours and take second place in the championship standings.
