What started as a championship dominated by Tom Sharp, the Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup is now headed by Carl Breeze as the action heads to the Snetterton 300 this weekend.
If a week is a long time in politics, a weekend is a very long time in the Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup, especially when there are three races on offer. This year’s championship has provided some excellent racing and the pendulum has swung in favour of the experienced Carl Breeze (TCR). Breeze, a mainstay of the championship, has been a regular race winner in the original G50 series and has now turned his focus on taking the 2011 crown. It started with points finishes rather than wins, but things changed at Thruxton when he won two out of the three races as title-race leader Tom Sharp struggled with tyre wear. Breeze took another win at Oulton Park and a further victory at Croft as Sharp’s season started to unravel: six wins in a row gave him a superb start to the season but then Thruxton proved to be a turning point. Sharps’ style seemed to wear his tyres quicker than other drivers’ rubber and he struggled to stay in the leading pack. Then, at Oulton Park, Tom struggled for pace in race one and just scrabbled into the top six in a wet race two. That didn’t help his points tally.
Then at Croft, Sharp’s weekend started badly. He changed tyres during qualifying and put on a non-permitted set. That caused his times (on those tyres) to be disallowed and he started from 11th on the grid. Then he was black-flagged for an out-of-position start and finished just 13th. A day later, he tangled with Stefan Hodgetts and went off the road… The net result is that Sharp is 13 points behind and needs to turn around his season this weekend.
But there is tough opposition as Nathan Freke, Stefan Hodgetts, Tim Harvey and Adam Morgan have all been winners this season and there are three wide-open races on the new Snetterton 300 this weekend.
In the G50 class, Tom Ingram heads Jody Fannin by 42 points, but Aaron Williamson and Jake Hill have proved their pace and will be in the mix as well, while brother-and-sister Andy and Louise Richardson are out to see who is best in their sibling rivalry. New for the G50 class this weekend will be Josh Fielding (JHR) who is Junior racer Sennan’s older brother while Phil Broad returns to Ginetta racing in one of Century Motorsport’s G55. It all adds up to another all-action weekend.
Qualifying for the Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup takes place on Saturday August 6th at 11:05 with race over over 7 laps at 14:25. Race two is at 17:50 running over 12 laps, with Sunday’s race a 12-lapper at 13:45. You can see all Sunday’s action live on ITV4.
