Anderson Maintains Skip Barber National Points Lead

Round 11 & 12 Wrap Up

Only two double headers remain in the 2011 BFGoodrich/Skip Barber National presented by Mazda, and the battle for the championship remains open as just nine championship points separate current leader Scott Anderson and Brandon Newey. At the conclusion of Rounds 11 and 12 at Lime Rock Park, Newey had reduced the gap by four points by earning a second and a third place finish. MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development driver Trent Hindman earned two podium finishes as well, taking home his second win of the season. The series next heads to the North Course at Autobahn Raceway September 9-11th.

Round 11Championship points leader Scott Anderson started from the California Scents Pole position for the fourth time in the 2011 season and quickly gained a sizeable lead once the green flag waved.  Each lap, Anderson continued to expand his lead as Trent Hindman, Brandon Newey, Shelby Blackstock and Sebastian Ordonez battled over second position.  Starting eighth, Ordonez worked his way up to the front of the field and together with MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development driver Trent Hindman, the two worked together to separate from the pack and rejoin the leader.  Newey and Blackstock followed suit and were able to close the gap separating them from the leaders as well.

Before too long, Ordonez caught up to Anderson, forcing the race leader to start racing defensively. As Ordonez made a pop for the lead, Anderson spun in turn one and the field saw a new leader in Ordonez with seven laps to go. Anderson recovered and rejoined quickly, passing Franco Aragones and Danilo Estrela in sixth and seventh in the following lap. Newey and Hindman went three wide with the race leader down the front straight, and Hindman snatched the lead exiting turn one.  As the white flag waved, Newey and Ordonez were neck and neck at the line. Heading into turn one, Sebastian Ordonez took the lead position and continued on to earn his first Skip Barber National win of the season. Brandon Newey finished in second just 0.156 seconds behind and Trent Hindman came in third.

Round 12MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development driver Trent Hindman led the field to green for the second race of the weekend with Shelby Blackstock passing Brandon Newey to take second position as the field raced down the straight. Not one to give up easily, Newey reclaimed his position into the first turn, while Sebastian Ordonez and Scott Anderson battled for fourth. Nearing the end of the first lap, Hindman already created a six car length lead over the field. Newey and Blackstock continued to fight for territory, allowing Hindman to continue to increase his lead as the race continued. In lap eight, MAZDASPEED Motorsports Development driver Danilo Estrela gained two positions, passing Franco Aragones and Skip Barber National newcomer Tristan Nunez.  Shortly after, however, Estrela was called into pitlane for a safety check after fluid was reported to be leaking from his machine.  After inspection, Estrela was cleared to rejoin.

Meanwhile, Anderson passed Newey for second and quickly started to pull away to chase after Hindman who still held an incredible lead. With nine laps to go, Hindman’s lead was over two seconds, but as the laps dwindled, Anderson slowly caught up, just feet within the leader’s draft.  Newey, Blackstock and Ordonez raced under the white flag three-wide for third position.  At the finish line, Trent Hindman took home his second win of the season, with Scott Anderson 0.547 seconds behind and Brandon Newey in third.
