SPEEDWAY News and fixtures

SPEEDWAY 1)PETERBOROUGH boss Trevor Swales issued an apology to travelling supporters after the Panthers’ 66-26 thrashing at Lakeside.Only stand-in skipper Troy Batchelor and youngster Linus Sundstrom beat a home rider as the visitors crashed to their second-heaviest away defeat in the top flight, and their worst for 14 years.Swales said: “I just feel sorry for the fans that came and watched. It wasn’t a loss, it was a humiliation.“Congratulations to Lakeside but we were exceptionally poor – but for two riders we didn’t take a point off the opposition all night.”(SPEEDWAY 2)RORY Schlein made a superb return to Brandon as his Belle Vue side gained a shock 49-41 away win at Coventry.Schlein dropped just one point in six rides and was well backed by several other former Bees riders with the Aces gaining all four points from the meeting to give them a glimmer of hope in the play-off race.Coventry went into the meeting with only five riders with co-boss Alun Rossiter preferring to look ahead rather than focus on an “escalation of problems.”He said: “We have to focus, move on and hopefully get a full side together for Peterborough a week on Monday. We ran them close there last time and this is now a meeting we have to win.”(SPEEDWAY 3)SCUNTHORPE’S Ben Wilson suffered knee and wrist injuries in a heavy crash during Heat 13 of the Scorpions’ home win over Plymouth.Wilson had been unbeaten to that stage and joins Richard Hall on the sidelines, but the home side still gained a 56-37 win with five riders paid for at least twelve points.Team boss Richard Hollingsworth said: “Hopefully a few days rest will see Ben fit to resume at Somerset next Friday, and Richard has said he’ll be back that night too. It was nice to have a big win and great to see so many of the team going well. “The track was a bit too slick and it caught David Howe out in the first race. After that he changed his set-up and went unbeaten.”(SPEEDWAY 4)EDINBURGH overcame tricky conditions to put in a much-improved home performance and beat Redcar 61-33.Jason Lyons and Aaron Summers performed well for the visitors but were upstaged by home duo Craig Cook and Kevin Wolbert in Heats 13 and 15.For Edinburgh it was their most solid display of the season, with the home side recording just two last places throughout the meeting as they recovered well from a recent home defeat by Glasgow.Co-promoter Alex Harkess said: “That was a much better showing from the team who all performed well. Considering the weather there was some pretty good racing.”(FIXTURES)
