Comini takes Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 title with four races to spare

Silverstone - Race 2‏

After securing a tenth pole position and a ninth victory of the season, Stefano Comini was duly reward by winning the Eurocup Megane Trophy 2011 title at Silverstone. The success is made all the more remarkable by the fact that there are still four races of the season remaining. Comini becomes the first Swiss driver to win the competition, while his victory also secures the Teams title for Oregon Team. Bas Schothorst (TDS Racing) and Niccolo Nalio (Oregon Team) completed the top three and joined Comini on the podium to celebrate his Eurocup Megane Trophy triumph. For the tenth time this season, Stefano Comini qualified for a race in pole position. The Swiss driver was under no pressure despite knowing he could secure the title with a win, and he started on the front row alongside Bas Schothorst. Once again, however, Comini lost his lead at the start. Schothorst was the man who led the field in the early stages, with Comini and Grégory Guilvert (Team Lompech Sport) in second and third respectively. Comini was not behind for long, and he managed to regain first place before the end of the first lap.Niccolo Nalio started the race in fifth, and he found himself held up behind Fabien Thuner (Boutsen Energy Racing) who sat in fourth. The Italian eventually found an opening and sneaked past Thuner, before setting his sights on Guilvert in third. Comini began to pull away, but the battle behind him between Schothorst, Guilvert and Nalio was extremely tight. Further back, Thuner and Faccin (Boutsen Energy Racing) were involved in a tussle for fifth place. Guilvert did not last much longer, however, as he was forced to retire with a mechanical problem shortly before the drivers started heading for the pits.Race and championship leader Comini was the first driver to make his pitstop, swiftly followed by Schothorst. Nalio followed suit a lap later, but the order of the front three remained unchanged after they rejoined the action.Despite being out in front, Comini knew his fate was no longer in his own hands. If Nalio were to remain in third, Comini would clinch the title. However, it his Italian team-mate were to overtake Schothorst and finish second, the champagne would have to stay on ice for just a bit longer.Behind the front three, Faccin and Thuner were involved in a superb battle for position. Faccin fell to fourth during his pitstop, and he was eventually overtaken by Thuner. Italy's Faccin refused to throw in the towel, however, and continued to pile the pressure on his team-mate. He managed to move back up into fourth, but Thuner overtook him once again during the penultimate lap.The order of the front three did not change for the rest of the race. Comini came home in first place for the ninth time this season, and his joy was plain for all to see. With Schothorst finishing second and Nalio third, Comini secured the Eurocup Megane Trophy title for the first time in his career. It was also a special moment for Oregon Team, with the Italian team winning the Teams title for the very first time. What they said

Stefano Comini: "It's a great feeling for my team, my entire family and for me. I've finally been able to have a shave, as I hadn't touched my beard since the half-way stage of the season out of superstition. I'm still hungry for victories, so even though the title is already in the bag for me and my team, I can still secure pole positions and win races."

Bas Schothorst: "Congratulations to Stefano, he's been very impressive and has had a great season. I had a positive race and I made a good start, but we knew I wasn't going to be very quick over the first few laps. Stefano overtook me, but I kept up the pace and I finished in a good position. I still believe I can win, and I want to win. I'll do everything I can to finish on top at Paul Ricard."

Niccolo Nalio: "Stefano was once again very quick. I lost two places at the start and I couldn't do anything against him in the first few laps. I then closed in on Bas Schothorst and I finished third. Congratulations to my team-mate Stefano, and to the team. The season continues at Paul Ricard, which is a circuit I've never been to before."
