It was a mixed weekend for the Aye Gee Suzuki team at round nine of the National Superstock 600 Championship at Cadwell Park. Josh Wainwright had a stunning race and finished in a fantastic fourth place, sadly Andy Reid was forced to retire early on after suffering a clutch problem.
Josh was running well throughout the weekend and was consistently within the top ten and setting some good race times. He finally managed to qualify on the second row in fifth place only 0.1 off pole position.
Josh did not gain a great start but the race was soon red flagged after a serious incident and restarted as a shortened 12-lap race. In the restart Josh gained a better start and was away with the leaders. He was soon up and battling for a podium position and dicing and swapping places on each lap, he was locked in a very tight battle with James East when the race was cut short and red flagged after eight laps.
Josh said "It was a really good race and I was having a real battle for third place, the bike felt great all weekend and I felt really comfortable at the track and found a really good set up with the Aye Gee Suzuki. I was in third place the lap prior to the red flag but Easty past me and the results stood as they were when the flag came out. I would really like to send me thoughts and condolences to the friends and family of Ben Gautrey he was a great person and will be sadly missed around the paddock."
Andy Reid struggled to get to grips with the big 600 around the technical Cadwell Park circuit and found it hard to adjust from riding the 125 round here. Despite this his lap times improved dramatically over the weekend and went from 42nd in first qualifying to 19th. Despite this Andy burnt out his clutch on the start of the first race and was unable to restart for the second restart.
Andy said "I'm really disappointed with the weekend I just couldn't settle into a good rhythm and it's difficult to learn to ride a 600 round here. I struggled all weekend but did improve as the weekend went on. I was unlucky to suffer a clutch problem on the start and wasn't able to make the restart. I would like to back up Josh's comments about Ben, my thoughts are with his family, team and friends."
The next round of the Championship is at Donington Park - 9th - 11th September.
