Hankey scores a win for Team Parker in Porsche Carrera Cup

A superb performance from Euan Hankey to take a win and a second place topped Team Parker Racing’s weekend in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Knockhill. The 24-year-old driver from Taunton in Somerset put in a completely dominant performance to win race two by 4.5 seconds for his third win of the season, the seventh success from 13 races for the Leicester-based Parker with Juta team.Hankey qualified second fastest, but took pole for race two. In the opening race he stayed within a closely matched leading trio throughout, dropping back to defend second late on after being baulked in backmarker traffic. In race two a devastating getaway preceded a Hankey disappearing act as he cleared off into the distance.“It’s never straightforward, but I wish every day was like this,” said Hankey. “After the battle in the first race I knew I’d be in for a tough fight. But I got an awesome start – starts like that come once in a blue moon – and it was all about consolidating it from then on. It was consistency, consistency. I’ve got to take my hat off to the team for giving me such a great car.”Team-mate Stephen Jelley came into the weekend as championship leader, but left the Scottish circuit down in second place in the rankings. The Leicester man was fastest in Friday testing, but was suffering from a stomach bug for the rest of the weekend, and was a disappointed sixth fastest in qualifying. Although he got up to fifth in the opening race, setting some front-running lap times while in clear air, Jelley lost out in the squabbling after a safety car and finished sixth. In race two he finally worked his way through to fifth just before half-distance, and from then on was catching the cars in front. But he ran out of time to make up any more places.Team principal Stuart Parker said: “Euan had a cracking weekend, but it’s frustrating, if that makes sense. Stephen and Euan were first and second in testing, but we gave it away in qualifying. Stephen was held up in traffic, had a spin on his second set of tyres but still improved.“Come the racing Euan was the meat in a sandwich in race one – should he attack or defend? In race two he had a blinding start, probably the best he’s ever had, and controlled it thereafter.“Stephen was not his usual jovial self this weekend but now he’s put his bogey circuit behind him and he can concentrate on trying to win the championship, while Euan is on really good form and can definitely pick up the pieces.”TORDOFF CHARGES UP TO FIFTHA charge from 11th on the grid to fifth at the chequered flag for Sam Tordoff was the highlight for the Team Parker Racing line-up of Carrera Cup rookies.Richard Plant had never competed at Knockhill before, but claimed 10th fastest in qualifying, one spot ahead of Tordoff, who had contested just one race weekend at the Scottish track.Leeds man Tordoff played a canny game to leapfrog three cars in a mix-up at the hairpin in the early stages, then made an opportunist move to spear ahead of Parker team-mate Jelley before the half-distance mark. That gave him fifth place, while Sheffield ace Plant was thwarted in his efforts to improve on eighth. In the second race, Tordoff this time started 10th with Plant 11th, and Tordoff led his team-mate home in the battle for eighth position.Team chief Stuart Parker said: “Sam was excellent in the test on Friday, so we were quietly confident, but both of them lost the best of their tyres trying to find a gap in qualifying. Sam drove a fantastic first race, and made the most of every opportunity that was presented to him to end up where he should have been in the first place!“‘Planty’ got stuck behind people in both races on a track where it’s probably easier to defend than anywhere else.”PIERCE IS A WINNER AT HOMEDextra JD Pierce by Parker driver Derek Pierce took his first ever pro-am1 class victory at his home circuit of Knockhill. The Scottish racer came out on top of a hectic battle in the first race, despite being punted sideways in an early tangle at the hairpin.Pierce, who had made a fantastic start, was running second in class when he was barged aside by the third-placed runner, in a move that also saw the pro-am1 leader tagged sideways. After controlling the sideways moment, Pierce accelerated into the lead and from then on led the class. He ceded positions to Pro class runners to finish ninth overall – and lost time as a result – but was still able to take his maiden win.“That was really, really hard,” said Pierce. “The car was very good but I worked the tyres hard when the guys from the Pro category caught me.”In race two he featured in one of the battles of the race, which eventually boiled down to a fight for second in the pro-am1 class, and was eventually forced to settle for fourth.Pierce’s usual team-mate Alex Martin was forced to skip the punishing Knockhill circuit after being advised to rest his back, but will return for the next round at Rockingham.Team Parker Racing’s John Taylor scored a fifth in the pro-am2 class in race one, before finishing sixth later on.Team principal Stuart Parker said: “Derek put in his strongest qualifying performance of the year. In the first race he made a perfect start, survived a harpooning at the hairpin and then got a result he thoroughly deserved. His second race was a bit harder, and he got a nudge and struggled a bit from then on.”As part of the ultra-popular British Touring Car Championship package, the Porsche Carrera Cup GB enjoyed live coverage of its second race at Knockhill on ITV4 and ITV4 HD, and was streamed live at itv.com/touringcars. The series, with the title battle finely poised, now moves on to Rockingham in Northamptonshire on the weekend of September 17/18.
