Mark Sandridge Paces Cayman Interseries Practice

 For Atlanta Historic Races at Road AtlantaMark Sandridge took a familiar spot at the top of the time charts in the opening day of Cayman Interseries practice for this weekend’s Atlanta Historic Races at Road Atlanta.  He set Friday’s fastest time around the 2.54-mile natural road course in the afternoon session with a top lap of 1:33.997. “This is probably my favorite track,” said Sandridge, who earned his first of three pole positions this season in his series debut at Road Atlanta earlier this year.  “This has more excitement in it and more thrills than any other track in America, as far as I’m concerned.”Sandridge’s No. 49 Cayman S is a white, red and yellow car themed after his IMSA championship-winning 1994 Team Salad Porsche 911 RSR, and will be co-driven this weekend by Georgia road racing legend Jack Baldwin. “The car is getting better,” Sandridge said.  “I think this whole thing is going to come down to Lee Davis, he’s really the one setting the pace around here this weekend.  He’ll be the one to beat at the end of the day.”Reigning Cayman Interseries champion and current points leader Davis paced the Friday morning practice session and turned the day’s second-fastest lap time of 1:34.618 in the afternoon session.  Davis will be joined this weekend by two-time Road Atlanta Cayman Interseries race winner Steve Jenkins in the black and red No. 33 Cayman, which displays the livery of the Advan Porsche 956s and 962s and Luna C Clothing.“The track is good, the car is good,” said Davis, who hails from nearby Alpharetta, Ga. “I love this track.  It’s my home track, so I’d better love it!”Both Sandridge and Davis are joined by different co-drivers this weekend as Ryan Eversley, who regularly co-drives with and coaches Davis, and Sandridge’s coach and teammate Joe Varde, will be competing at Mid-Ohio in the season-ending GRAND-AM event.  This weekend marks the debut of the JRZ Suspension Engineering “Fine Tuning Award,” which will be presented to the Cayman Interseries competitor that demonstrates the most progress each weekend by improving car setup, on-track performance and lap times.  The No. 9 and No. 23 Caymans, entered by Tim Lewis Jr.  and Lori Cassling, respectively, are early front-runners for this weekend’s award, as the lap times of both entries improved by over three seconds in the afternoon session.  Lewis turned the third-fastest lap of the day with a second-session lap time of 1:35.095 in the pink and white No. 9 Cayman S, which runs the livery of the Blaupunkt/Joest Racing Porsche 962C that was driven to a third-place finish in the 1989 24 Hours of Le Mans by Hans Stuck and Bob Wollek. Cassling also wheels a pink Porsche, with her Cayman S showcasing the famous livery of the “Pink Pig” Porsche 917/20 that raced at Le Mans in 1971.Bob Schneider, who first raced with the Cayman Interseries this year at Mid-Ohio, unveiled his No. 40 Cayman at this weekend’s event.  The brilliant white paint with blue and red stripes pays homage to the Martini Porsches of 1970’s fame.  Schneider turned the third fastest lap time in the first session and settled in at fourth fastest for the day with a time of 1:35.243 in the afternoon session.Bill Riddell rounded out the top five with a lap time of 1:37.640 in his green and white No. 80 Cayman S, which pays tribute to a David Piper Racing Porsche 917K, followed by the No. 18 of Randal Cassling, who completed the circuit in 1:38.296 in the afternoon session behind the wheel of his No. 18 Cayman S adorned in the livery of one of the factory yellow, red and black Shell/Dunlop Porsche 962s. Following a Saturday morning qualifying session the Cayman Interseries will see a full day of racing, beginning with the first of the weekend’s two sprint races at 11:15 a.m. and ending with a 90-minute endurance race scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
