Teenage motor racing star Charlie Robertson capped-off a fantastic debut season in cars with his ninth podium of the year at Silverstone National Circuit on Sunday, 16th October, during the final round of the 2011 Ginetta Junior Championship. In what has been a record-breaking campaign for the 14-year-old from Whyteleafe in Surrey, sixth place in the first of the weekend's races on Saturday was enough to clinch the Vice-Champion's spot in the driver standings. Third place in round 20 put the icing on the cake for a fantastic debut season.Making headlines from the off this year, the HHC Motorsport driver hit the ground running with an incredible performance during the opening event of 2011 at Brands Hatch - setting a new lap record on his first competitive outing. Since then, he has entered the record books as the youngest driver in the UK to win a car race and concludes the year with three victories in total under his belt."Second in the championship is fantastic, the team has done an absolutely great job all year and we've had some great races", said Charlie, "This weekend hasn't been our best of the season but we were still able to take away two good results so I'm really happy. We've shown how quick we are so hopefully we can come back next year and try and win the championship."Qualifying eighth on the grid for round 19, the Caterham School pupil had a tough task on his hands but rose to the challenge well and quickly climbed into seventh place in what rapidly became a very tight Ginetta Junior encounter.Making his way into the top six on lap four, following an excursion into the gravel at Becketts for Tom Howard, the HHC racer leapt up to fourth on lap seven and began to edge closer to the top three as the race neared its conclusion. Getting the gap down to just 1.4 seconds, Charlie unfortunately slipped to fifth before being pushed back to sixth on the penultimate tour. With the result enough to seal the runner-up spot in the championship, Charlie headed into the last race of the season intent on enjoying a strong finish. Lining up sixth on the grid, a difficult start made Charlie's podium bid a tough challenge with a multi-car incident at Brooklands - triggered by a spin for Sennan Fielding - leading to a chaotic conclusion to lap one.Running in 11th position, Charlie had to muster a spirited fightback and after setting the fastest lap of the race on the fifth tour he set about slicing his way through the order. Picking off two drivers on lap seven, the talented youngster made his way into seventh ahead of the final lap where all manner of chaos broke loose.Contact between two cars at Becketts led to a shake-up of the order and Charlie was able to nip through unscathed to grab third place which he held to the flag on lap 11 for his ninth rostrum visit of the year.
"We got a pretty bad start to the second race, I ended up in about 10th or 11th place but we managed to work our way back through the pack", explained Charlie, "Then the four people in front of me had a coming together on the last lap which put us up into third - I wasn't expecting that at all!"I could see Seb (Morris) and Niall (Murray) battling hard in front of me and I hoped they might make a bit of a mistake too which would put me through for another win. That wasn't to be but we ended up third which is great for the last round of the championship, I'm really pleased. Thanks to my mum and dad and the team for giving me so much support this season."Final 2011 Ginetta Junior Championship Driver Standings:Champion: Seb Morris, 562pts; Vice-Champion: Charlie Robertson, 437pts
