Kop Hill Climb, the annual hill climb event in Princes Risborough, is gearing up for the best revival yet. Now in its fourth year, Kop Hill Climb 2012 will take place on 22nd and 23rd September. Kop Hill has announced that car manufacturer Chevrolet UK will be the principal sponsor of the event.Given Chevrolets association with the famous Goodwood Festival of Speed, it seemed appropriate that we should look to focus on a more grass roots event as well, said Chevrolet UK Managing Director, Mark Terry. Chevrolet is a brand thats all about everyday heroes, and the people that brought this famous event back into the public eye are very much that. This year sees an amazing array of veteran, vintage and classic cars and motorcycles ranging from 1904 to 1973 and some present day supercars to complete the mix.The emphasis will be on Edwardian vehicles, that is those built from 1905 to 1918. To open Kop Hill Countess Howe will flag off a 1913 GP Sunbeam driven by Nick Pellett. An enlarged display area for clubs will ensure there is something for everyone to see.An exciting Soapbox Challenge competition has been announced to run during the weekend, and will help Chevrolet to celebrate the Corvettes 60th anniversary year. The Challenge is open to competitors aged 10 to 17, who will be invited to design and construct a soapbox cart. Entrants will compete as teams of up to 6 members, and there are many categories including fastest, furthest, and spirit of the event. For rules and entry form go to the website www.kophillclimb.info.ukand click on Soapbox Challenge.During the weekend spectators will be able to travel from Kop Hill to Chinnor by vintage bus and ride on a train at Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway before a return trip. A true vintage transport weekend! And how do you fancy winning a Ferrari? All you have to do is guess the correct six number code and you could be roaring away in a very desirable vehicle. There will also be a very special raffle courtesy of Stratstone Aston Martin Amersham. Win an Aston Martin Factory experience, including tour of the factory, lunch and the experience of driving one of the latest models with a qualified performance driver. Attractions for all the family include the return of the fantastic Haurel and Lardy, who will recreate the legendary double act, a fly past by a Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight on the Saturday, a live stage programme of bands, interviews and auction, and a childrens area including The Jungle Bus and bouncy castle. Why not come in period costume and enter into the spirit of the event? Visit the food and drink court and browse the sponsors and traders stands. Thanks go to the Hampden Estate, Brimmers Farm and Princes Risborough School for use of the land that makes Kop Hill Climb possible. Also thanks to the local residents for their patience and involvement during the weekend.Last year saw over 12,000 visitors over the weekend, and 40,000 being raised for local charitable causes. A BRIEF HISTORY OF KOP HILLMeetings at Kop Hill took place from 1910 through to 1925 when many motor clubs ran events prior to 1920.The first events were for motorcycles and Kop Hill in those days was barely a road, with a surface of compacted dirt and loose macadam. The crowds that gathered would stand at the road side which was much more open than the wooded hillside it has now become.Kop Hill Climb quickly established itself as one of the most popular of the time and many famous names including Sir Malcolm Campbell, Archie Frazer Nash, Sir Henry Segrave and Louis Zborowski took runs up the hill.Zborowski holds the record for the fastest ever time of 26.8 seconds driving an aero engined Ballot. In 1925 the future of Kop Hill changed for good. A crowd stood at the top of the hill to see a Brescia Bugatti, driven by Francis Giveen, an Oxford undergraduate.Giveen lost control on a right hand bend, ran off the road and hit a spectator, before regaining control and continuing. The spectators leg was broken and the rest of the days action was cancelled. After this accident the RAC banned all speed events from taking place on publicroads.TICKETS -Discounted entry tickets will be available in advance at Princes Risborough Information Centre and the Iain Rennie shop in Princes Risborough.
