POOLE are in the driving seat to finish top of the Elite League after a 49-41 win over nearest rivals Swindon at Wimborne Road.Darcy Ward scored a paid maximum for the Pirates who were indebted to a stunning ride from new recruit Piotr Pawlicki in the penultimate race to help them see off a strong Robins challenge.Manager Neil Middleditch said: It was a mesmerising ride and for a kid of 17-years of age to produce four laps of such maturity under pressure with Doyley (Jason Doyle) and (Dawid) Lampart throwing everything at him to prevent him getting past was one of the great, great heats of speedway.Poole now lead Swindon by five points, with the Robins having a home match against Lakeside in hand, and the Pirates can clinch top spot when they travel to Birmingham next Monday.

PETERBOROUGH have charged into the Elite League play-off places with a 54-38 win over fellow top-four contenders Eastbourne at the Showground.Recently-appointed skipper Linus Sundstrom led the way for the Panthers with 12-points as they moved ahead of the Eagles and remained in front of Lakeside, who had to be content with two league points from a narrow 47-43 win over Coventry.Peterborough boss Jan Staechmann said: We wanted the full six points from the meetings against Lakeside and Eastbourne, and the boys have done the business for us. These two results have given us some momentum ahead of the three away meetings that lie ahead.Four clubs are covered by just two points as they battle for the final two play-off places, with sixth-placed Birmingham still having three home matches to complete.

SOMERSET have arranged the home leg of their League Cup semi-final against Newcastle for next Wednesday, September 19.The Rebels have had to move off their regular Friday race-night due to fixture congestion but will offer 2 discount vouchers for their first meeting in the Premier League play-offs to supporters who attend the clash with the Diamonds.Promoter Debbie Hancock said: Obviously we would have preferred it if we could have held the match on our usual Friday race-night, but Newcastle are at Plymouth that night in a league fixture which could not be re-arranged in order for it to be staged prior to the cut-off date ahead of the play-offs.We did announce a while back that season tickets will be valid for our home leg in the semi-final of the League Cup, but I can also announce that season tickets will also be valid for both of our home matches in the play-offs thereby actually enhancing the original season ticket package.(FIXTURES)
