Three wins in the final three races on the full Silverstone Grand Prix circuit saw Alex Eacock claim the 2012 Porsche Club Championship title, pipping long-time points leader Paul Follett to both the overall crown and Class Two honours. A penalty in qualifying saw Follett start from the back of the grid in the first two races, while Eacock took full advantage of his rivals poor starting slot to drive a faultless weekend.Weve had some bad luck this year, said Eacock, but we knew what we had to do and this final weekend the luck has been on our side as the car has been reliable and I kept out of trouble. Im looking forward to celebrating now, and Ill have to come to the end of season prize giving now!It was a good weekend for EMC Motorsport as Pete Morris emulated team-mate Eacock to take three wins at a meeting he was sponsoring and claim the Class One title, a class he last won in 2004.An Invitation class allowed non-championship racers to contest the annual Bill Taylor Trophy for best handicap performance, the award going to newcomer Graham Knight in his 944 S2. Gary Marsh set the invitation class pace, another to take three wins over the meeting.QualifyingMorris headed the Club runners at the end of Friday mornings 20-minute qualifying session, second quickest overall with Mark McAleer less than a second behind. Richard Ellis was third quickest in his Strasse 993 C2, ahead of Ben Demetriou, with John McCullagh splitting the Hartech Boxters by just outpacing Demetrious team-mate Marcus Carniel. Usual Class One front-runner Mark Proctor was only 11th of the Club runners, never having driven the Silverstone GP circuit before.I like the full GP circuit and it was always going to suit the 996, said Morris. I was hoping for poles, I need to convert them into wins.Alex Eacock headed the Class two runners in an impressive 10th overall, but the story of qualifying was championship leader Paul Follett, who lost all his times after the session due to a yellow flag infringement and would start the first two races from the back of the grid. That felt good out there, said Eacock, though we have a bit of a misfire at the top end we need to sort out, I was nervous leading up to this meeting, but now I feel Im either going to do it or not and Im going to just get on with things.Gary Marsh was quickest overall and headed the invitation class runners in his 997 GT3 Cup, with Dave Whelan next up with his 993 RSR. A late lap from Mark Chilton saw him push his space-frame Cayman Turbo up to third in the invitation class, the session the brand-new cars first real run on a circuit.Race OneMorris and McAleer both got away well at the start of Friday afternoons race, Ellis slotting into third ahead of Demetriou. The lead pair began to ease away from the rest, Ellis in turn opening a gap on Demetriou at the front, while a fast starting Proctor was already battling for fifth with Carniel. The lead pair circulated together, Morris holding the gap at half a second and never letting McAleer close enough to have an opportunity to mount a clear challenge. Proctor finally put a definitive move on Carniel on lap eight for fifth and set off after Demetriou, Carniel still in close attendance.Morris took the flag at the end of lap 10, McAleer following him across the line, with Ellis a secure third behind. Proctor had closed on Demetriou in the final laps and got outside the Boxster exiting Luffield for the final time, taking the place as he won the drag-race to the line.Mark McAleer kept me honest, but that just shows how much this circuit suits the 996s, said Morris. It was a cracking race, I was hoping for an easy one but that certainly wasnt it! Mark was never close enough to make a lunge under the brakes, and he nearly got me as we caught some backmarkers through Maggots and Becketts.I was closebut not close enough! said McAleer. I thought we had another lap to go and was going to make a big move, but it was still great fun.I was running on my own for a lot of that, said Ellis, I was just trying to concentrate and keep a good gap on the guys behind me, and managed to hang on in there. That could have been third place but I took too long to get past Marcus Carniel, said Proctor. It was a good clean race, I managed to force Ben Demetriou into a mistake on the last corner, and Im chuffed with fourth as I have not been out on this circuit layout before. In Class Two, Eacock led all the way, but Follett was charging up the order, quickly up to third in class and getting past Mark Koeberle before the end to take second in class and keep his title hopes alive. We are still chasing that misfire but it was a good race, said Eacock. I knew Paul Follett was on a mission and to take second from where he started was seriously impressive, but it is all get pretty close now on the points.Gary Marsh led all the way in the Invitation class, Dave Whelan second early on before suffering an engine issue. Chilton had started from the pit-lane due to a loose wheel on the green flag lap, and had stormed his way past 25-cars in three laps before his engine seized, putting the Cayman out for the weekend. Graham Knight bought his 944 S2 home second in class.Race TwoMcAleer took the lead on the opening lap of Saturday mornings race, with Morris right with him, the pair again opening a gap on the rest of the field. Ellis was an early third, but Proctor had made a great start in his 993 C2 and was right with Carniel for fourth at the end of the first lap and into the position on the next tour.Morris set a fastest race lap to that point on lap two, and next time round was ahead of McAleer. Behind, Proctor took third from Ellis on lap four and pulled away, but the front duo was already out of reach. McAleer closed on Morris in the final laps but once more was never in a position to mount a challenge, while Proctor came home third ahead of Carniel and Demetriou. It was greasy out there at the start, said Morris. Mark got past me at the start and I outbraked him into Copse and had a flashback to when I went off there a couple of years ago. The car was good and I was able to keep just clear of him.Pete was quicker than me today, said McAleer, I was pushing hard and got past him at the start, he was waiting for his new tyres to come in and then he had more pace. I got close towards the end, but again never close enough to make a challenge.I got a cracking start, said Proctor. I wanted to be fourth into the first corner and I did, then the Boxsters got me further round the lap. I was back past them quickly and chase down Richard Ellis, then put my head down and went.Eacock was again never headed in Class Two and scoring valuable points, Follett once more repeating his feat of working his way up to second from the back of the grid in his 968 CS.I was pushing all race, I was on my own and had to keep focussed, said Eacock. All I can do this weekend it try to do my best in all three races and hope that is good enough.Marsh led overall to take his second Invitation class win, Knight again taking second.Race ThreeThe final race of the 2012 Porsche Club Championship season would decide the title race, momentum having moved to Eacock, Follett having to beat his Class Two rival and take fastest lap once dropped scores were taken into account. Koeberle took the early class lead, but by the end of lap three it was Eacock at the front and with Follett unable to move higher than third the title went the way of the EMC Motorsport racer, Eacock fourteen points clear with Follett title runner-up.That was the hardest race all year, said Eacock, Mark Koeberle was having a real good go, but all year everyone in Class Two has been fair and given each other room and worked hard. The season seems like a marathon, but it all came down to the last race, said Follett. I hadnt really recovered from the qualifying penalty, second in the first two races gave me a chance, and if I had beaten Alex and got fastest lap it would have saved my lead, but with dropped scores I had to beat him., and my chance slipped away.At the front of the Porsche Club runners the battle was once more between Morris and McAleer, the pair swapping positions through the race before Morris made his decisive lead challenge going into lap eight, getting a good exit out of Luffield and going inside McAleer through Woodcote. Morris took his third win of the weekend and the Class One title, McAleer on the second step of the podium.I get to go home with my own trophy, joked Morris after claiming for the PMC Midlands trophy that was up for grabs over the three races. I had wanted to win three on the trot, but Mark was good on the brakes and would wait for me to make a mistake and go past. I had to block him on the last lap, I knew he really wanted it. Its nice to be Class One champion again. My car was stronger in some places, but I had no answer to him at times, said McAleer. My car was better in the quicker sections, but he was able to pull it back again on the straightsa brilliant race, best of the weekend.Proctor started from the pit lane to ensure he got the 20-points for starting the race then retired his sick 993, and the battle for third was between Hartech team-mates Carniel and Demetriou, Carniel coming out on top the pair right together for the second half of the race.I made a mistake right on the opening lap, hit Ben, and we ended up briefly locked together! said Carniel. We had our work cut out to fight our way through, and Ben was all over me at the end, we had agreed before the race no tactics and lets just race each other. An unbelievable battle, said Demetriou, I tried to go round the outside of Mark McAleer and Marcus and I tangled, and after that the race to get back to the front was really good, I owe a big thanks to all at Hartech for a great year.Marsh was another to take three out of three with another Invitation class win, Whelan second this time in his re-fettled 993 RSR. Knight took third in the class, his consistent performance over the three races enough to see him awarded the Bill Taylor Trophy for a handicap win.I love the Silverstone GP circuit, said Marsh, and I could let rip with the car in the final race and lean on it a bit more than in the other racesgreat fun! With the handicap system I wasnt expecting to win the trophy! said Knight, who added to EMC Motorsports victory tally. Ive enjoyed my racing all weekend, and tried my hardest to test myself against the Porsche Club guys and I hope I can get involved permanently next season.Porsche Club Championship Round 13: 1 Pete Morris (996 C2) 10 laps; 2 Mark McAleer (996 C2) + 0.465s; 3 Richard Ellis (996 C2); 4 Mark Proctor (993 C2); 5 Ben Demetriou (Boxster S); 6 Marcus Carniel (Boxster S); 7 Kevin Harrison (964 C2); 8 Chris Dyer (968 CS); 9 John McCullagh (968 CS); 10 Alex Eacock (968 CS).
