Students at The Bourne Academy will literally be looking onwards and upwards on the 4th October when an Apache helicopter from 673 Squadron Army Air Corps will be making a special landing on the Academy sports field. Engineering is one of the Academys specialisms and the visit is designed to inspire students into a career in engineering.
The Apache aircraft are made by AgustaWestland in Yeovil, powered by Rolls-Royce engines and many of the components on board are designed and built in Britain. In many respects the aircraft is at the cutting edge of engineering excellence; the combination of on board technology, electronics, aerodynamics and communications ensure that it remains at the forefront of UK military capability.
The Bourne Academy is also developing its own engineering excellence; over the past year the Academys Engineering Team, guided by their teachers and industry mentors designed, built and raced their own electric carThe Bourne Bullet. They successfully entered the Greenpower South West regional qualifiers at Merryfield and are set to qualify for the finals at Goodwood in October.
When the brand new 10 million Sixth Form opens in September 2013 the Academys students will have a fantastic opportunity to continue their education and build meaningful links with both further education and employers. It is hoped that the continued success of the Academy will encourage relationships to develop with the commercial world in order to provide high quality, motivated and employable business leaders of the future. In the short term, it might even provide some much needed sponsorship for The Bourne Bullet in helping it reach the top..
