200 guests mark tenth anniversaryFive former champions gather at Porsche Experience Centre40 million contributed to UK motorsport in a decadeThe tenth anniversary of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB was marked at Silverstone yesterday (Friday 5 October) when 200 guests attended a celebration evening at the Porsche Experience Centre.Some key statistics from a decade of the Carrera Cup GB were revealed. In 10 years, and 195 races to date, Carrera Cup cars have completed 400,000 miles, covered 70,000 racing laps and made 3500 race starts. The championship has contributed in excess of 40 million into the British motor sport industry.Chris Craft, Managing Director of Porsche Cars GB, introduced the evening and paid tribute to the Carrera Cup family of teams, drivers and organisers. The championship has gone from strength to strength, said Craft. It is the best one-make race series in Britain.On hand were five of the six drivers to have won the overall title to date, with only 2004 champion Richard Westbrook absent due to race commitments in the US. Barry Horne (2003), Damien Faulkner (2005 and 2006), James Sutton (2007 and 2011), Tim Harvey (2008 and 2010) and Tim Bridgman (2009) were there, along with current 2012 championship leader Michael Meadows.Faulkner, now racing GT Porsches professionally in the US, paid tribute to the Carrera Cups role in advancing his career. It was a fantastic launch pad for me and we had some great times. I loved the challenge that the cars presented.Harvey, the most successful Carrera Cup racer to date with 36 race wins, said it was a tough championship to win after coming close several times before his first title in 2008. The Carrera Cup is a really hard championship to win, said Harvey. That makes it all the more worthwhile when you do win.
