After illness sidelined Andreas in the last round of competition, he was eager to get back in the game for the final round of ADAC GT Masters competition, and was in top form for his home race at Hockenheim.
Now in its sixth year running, the ADAC GT Masters is proving to be one of the toughest series - with top talent and highly tuned GT cars, qualifying times are tight. This past weekend 16 cars were separated by just one-second in qualifying, and history shows that a good grid position is imperative in a field of 30-40 cars.
2012 was a rocky season for the newly paired duo of Wirth and Frentzen, and they endured more than their fair share of bad luck and disappointment. At Wirths home race this trend unfortunately continued and the #27 Callaway Competition Corvette finished in 7th and 15th despite their strong potential.
While the first race of the weekend looked promising, with the #27 pushing from 10th and getting as far through the field as 4th place, Frentzen unfortunately experienced a problem with the fuel pump coming out of the final corner, losing three positions on the front straight before crossing the finish line in 7th place.
With good potential for Sundays race, the #27 started from 5th on the grid, but a poor start and lost time in the pits meant the duo would only see a 15th place result. An obviously annoyed Wirth commented, Unfortunately Heinz-Harald didnt have the best start today, and we lost a lot of time in the pit when our car wouldnt re-start. We had some updates to the software this weekend, and despite our best efforts things still went wrong. Losing 42 seconds in the pits for something like this is extremely frustrating, because if you consider the times at the top and our race result, you can see we had a very good chance to fight for a podium finish.
"I had a lot of sponsors and friends who came out to support me in my home race and I think overall we put on a great show, even if the end result was not what we hoped for," said Wirth after the finale. "Unfortunately, the season ends as it beganwith disappointment. Its also really unfortunate that our teammates, Diego Alessi and Daniel Keilwitz, lost the title-fight, and we just werent able to contribute enough points to make it possible for Callaway to win in the team championship fight.
Wrapping up the weekend Wirth concluded, It was certainly not an easy season, so Im a little relieved that its over - now we put all this bad luck behind us and look forward at 2013. Well be concentrating our efforts on some of the problems we encountered this season and will try to remedy any errors so we can go for the championship again! My sincere thanks go out to the whole Callaway Competition team for all that they did this year. We had more than our share of problems, but the team never gave up and always worked hard to solve the problems. It has been really nice to know how the whole team is working hard to succeed, and Im confident we will get our chance to taste success yet! "
