Jackson wins Race 2 from 17th

Mat Jackson has won todays second Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship race at Silverstone after a stunning drive through the field from 17th on the grid.

Jason Plato was leading until the final laps when his KX Momentum Racing MG6 suddenly slowed and stopped on the start-finish straight with an ECU failure.

By this time Jackson had climbed to second and just moments after he flashed past Platos stricken machine he overtook Robert Collards eBay Motors BMW for the lead into Copse Corner.

From there the Warwickshire ace cruised to his third win of the seasonalso the first for Redstone Racings NGTC-spec Ford Focus which it introduced at Snetterton in early August. Jackson also set a new lap record during his charge up the order.

Ironically, it had been Jackson who had retired from the lead in this mornings opening race, handing the win to Plato.

Jackson told btcc.net: That is the best win of my career, no doubt about it17th to first and the first win for the teams new Focus which weve built and developed from scratch. The car was dynamite every lap. Just brilliant.

Finishing second and third were Collard and Dave Newsham in his Team ES Racing.com Vauxhall Vectra to add to his runner-up result in race one. Again, though, he had to work hard to fend off Redstones Aron Smith who crossed the line in fourth, himself closely followed in fifth by Rob Austins RAR Audi A4.

Meanwhile Plato was not the only high profile name to retire. Matt Neal, the man hes chasing for second in the championship, had to make an emergency stop at the side of the track with flames pouring from his Honda Yuasa Racing Team Civics exhaust. This necessitated a safety car period while the trackside fire was extinguished.

By contrast fellow factory Honda driver Gordon Shedden finished seventh just behind Collards team-mate Tom Onslow-Cole. As a result Shedden has further increased his lead over Neal at the top of the championship standings to 21 points. Plato, in third, is 27 adrift

In fact it was a well-worked drive by Shedden who, having spent many laps skilfully rebuffing several drivers, then lunged past Onslow-Coles team-mate Nick Foster for seventh on the final lap under braking for Becketts Corner.

Having started 19th following his first-race retirement, Daniel Welch took eighth in his Welch Motorsport Proton Persona. Andrew Jordan was ninth in his Pirtek Racing Civic, just ahead of Foster, team-mate Jeff Smith and Frank Wrathalls Dynojet Toyota.

Adam Morgan could have been in that mix but lost time and places when his Speedworks Toyota was tapped into a spin on the first lap. Will Bratt also retired when his RAR Audis rear suspension was damaged in a collision with Andy Neates MG at Becketts, the latter then losing a lap in the pit lane while a punctured tyre was replaced. Tony Gilham (Thorney Vauxhall Insignia), Ollie Jackson (AmD Tuning.com VW Golf) and Howard Fuller (Team HARD. Honda) were also retirements.
