Lynch maintains top three at Pembrey Rallycross

Tony Lynch has retained his top three championship position after the penultimate round of the Swift Sport Rallycross Championship at Pembrey last weekend. The Lucas Oil Team Geriatric driver made the trip to South Wales eager to try and fight for a second win of the year, although it would turn out to be another challenging weekend on track. The weekend started in difficult fashion when contact at the start of the opening heat dropped Tony to the back of the field, although he came back through the pack to cross the line second. A jump start in heat two then saw Tony put to the back of the grid, although he once again came back strongly to set the fastest lap en-route to third.Heat three however would prove to be one to forget when contact from Darren Scott put Tony into retirement with a broken CV joint, with the team then forced to replace the rear beam and near-side drive shaft prior to the finalwith bodywork damage also being hastily taped up to allow Tony to take his place on the grid. From fifth, Tony was keen to make forward progress when the lights went out, although he was soon in the wars when contact ahead between James Knight-Coney and Darren Scott left Tony with no-where to go; the resulting contact with Scott seeing him lose his already damaged bodywork.Later forced wide while dicing with Paige Bellerby for position as he once again tried to fight his way through the field, Tony was shuffled back to sixth and would cross the line in the same position in his damaged car. With just one round remaining this season, Tony remains third in the standings, with an eleven-point deficit to leader Chris Mullen. Tony however remains eleven points clear of James Knight-Coney as he seeks to secure a top three championship finish for the third straight season.Yet again it proved to be a difficult weekend, Tony said. Luck really hasnt been on our side this season and it was the same again in Wales, although Ive still come out the weekend sitting third in the championship standings. The heats were difficult and although we had good pace, the contact from Darren in heat three really left us up against it for the final. The boys did a fantastic job to repair the damage although the fact wed not been able to finish the third heat meant we were right in the middle of the pack.In the final, I was left with no-where to go when Darren braked right in front of me, which meant we missed out on the chance to make up places on the first lap. Even though the car didnt feel quite right, I was coming back up the field until I was forced to run off the edge of the track while battling with Paige and that cost me a place and left me down in sixth.Itll be a tall order to win the championship with the eleven point gap and just one round to go, but that wont stop me pushing hard when we get to Croft. However, the focus is on making sure we at least keep third in standings, which would be a great achievement for a third season in a row.
