Oli Basey-Fisher Latest Gets Podium Success In Ginetta Winter Series
Oli Basey-Fisher concluded his 2012 motor racing programme with a deserved podium finishthe second of his rookie yearduring the three-round ATL Racing Fuel Cells Ginetta Junior Winter Series at Rockingham on Saturday, 10th November.Switching to the Douglas Motorsport team for the end-of-season mini championship, the Century Logistics-supported 17-year-old was inspired from the off and starred in qualifying to take his first car racing pole position for round one in tricky, wet conditions.Although slipping to third on the run to Deene Hairpin, the Great Finborough driver clearly had the wet-weather pace to be a contender and on lap two just 0.9 seconds covered the top three. Into the first hairpin though, the second time around, team-mate and race leader Andrew Watson ran wide under braking which enabled Oli to assume second place.Following a two-lap Safety Car period, racing resumed on lap five but Watson mistakenly passed Oli before the green flag. Even so, it didnt matter in the end as the Irish driver had another excursion, this time at Brook Chicane, which led to instant retirement.Dramatic action continued apace but on lap seven the red flags were shown when a backmarker made contact with the wall at Turn One. With the result declared from the end of lap five, Oli was credited with second and only just missed out on the fastest lap of the race by a mere 0.2 seconds. As the track surface dried more and more throughout the day, rounds two and three werent quite as fruitful for Oli but he still secured a brace of sixth placesalthough in the final race he claimed the points for fifth due to a time penalty for Watson.Starting round two from third on the grid, by virtue of his second best lap in qualifying, the Suffolk teenager retained third exiting Deene and remained in the podium positions until lap four when he was challenged on the inside at Tarzan Hairpin. Hitting back the next time around, a fantastic battle with William Palmer ensured but on lap seven both ran widedropping Oli to sixth place. For the third and final round, the Douglas Motorsport driver started sixthas per his finishing spot from the previous encounterand made a great getaway to climb into fourth. Although nudged back to sixth, team-mate Watsons aforementioned penalty meant fifth on corrected times. Its been a fantastic weekend in how well Ive improved, said Oli, Testing was very encouraging, I fitted in with the guys at Douglas immediately and weve worked really well together. I really have enjoyed every moment this weekend and I cant thank the team enough for giving me a great car.We were top four in testing all day on Friday but the wet qualifying was the first time Id run on these particular tyres in those conditions. To go out and bang in the third quickest lap, and then right at the end manage to get my first pole, was absolutely phenomenal. We didnt always qualify that well in the main championship so to do that this weekend was very important for me.He added: I got quite a bad start in the first race but managed to get back into second, being back on the podium again is exactly what we wanted to try and achieve this weekend. We lacked a little bit of pace in the dry for the second and third races but Im happy with how things have gone and looking forward to whatever we might do next year.Capping off his maiden year in cars superbly, Oli is now looking ahead to a fresh challenge in 2013 due to the fact he must graduate from Ginetta Junior, after just a single season of action, because of the categorys upper age limit.Provisional 2012 ATL Racing Fuel Cells Ginetta Junior Winter Series Standings:CHAMPION: Harry Woodhead, 91pts; 4th Oli Basey-Fisher, 69pts
