McConville becomes V8 Utes Winton Wizard

Cameron McConville is the wizard of Winton after a dominant performance all weekend in Round Seven of the 2012 Auto One V8 Ute Racing Series - protected by Armor All, whilst Craig Dontas had his first Race win Sunday, 17th November. Hustling his Bundaberg Rum / Cellarbrations SS Holden to victory in the final race of the round this afternoon McConville was clearly the fastest driver over three days including practice, qualifying and at least two races.“It was a solid weekend for the Walkinshaw team,” smiled the round winner, “they gave me a great car and we had fantastic speed. Race Two was pretty hectic but we stayed clear of the trouble and recorded a fantastic result.”McConville was the first of three V8 Supercar pedigree drivers to chequered flag in the final race with Jason Bargwanna in second and Nathan Pretty third.Bargwanna recorded the best result for the Auto One Wildcard this season with his spirited runner up position for the Round in the Williams Race Tech prepped SS Holden.“I’ve definitely got a deeper appreciation for what these Ute guys do to get these things around,” smiled Bargwanna, “the competition is pretty fierce and there’s plenty of fast cars out there. I’m pleased for Auto One and for Williams Race Tech that we can have a weekend like this.”Nathan Pretty was back to his brilliant best in the Monster Energy SS Holden and back to 100% health after sickness derailed his series assault at the previous round on the Gold Coast.David Sieders’ fourth place finish was critical in the overall scheme of things, it gave him second overall for the Round and the Sydneysider has closed to within 15 points of series leader Ryal Harris as the Championship concludes at Homebush. Trailing Sieders in fifth place was the ever consistent Kim Jane (Bob Jane T-Marts SS), ahead of Dontas who along with Andrew Fisher had a fairly lonely race, holding on to sixth and seventh respectively. The battle was on for eighth with Harris taking Gary Baxter in lap seven. Phonsy Mullan had his best result for the weekend in tenth, holding out Tom Williamson (11th), Gerard McLeod (12th) and Kris Walton who was forced to come in to pit lane due to a deflated front left tyre from an incident in Lap 5. Hard charging South Aussie Craig Dontas had never been to V8 Ute victory lane prior to today so when he stormed from the second row of the grid to lead by the first turn there was no doubt he’d be reluctant to hand back the point position.“I got a great start,” beamed the Thirsty Camel Holden pilot, “when we got to the front I wasn’t going to give it up. I slowed down a lot in the last lap or two to make sure that I didn’t overdrive. That allowed Chucky (Baxter) to close in but I wasn’t going to make any dumb moves and cough this one up.”Fellow South Aussie Gary Baxter chased Dontas home driving the Sage Automation Holden to record his best result in recent memory. (Baxter also picked up the Champion Spark Plugs Hole Shot Award later in the day for the best Race Start in Race 3).“It was nice to put in some good laps and get a result for the team,” he recalled, “Wayne and the boys at Williams Race Tech have had the car right on the money this weekend and this is the proof.”Third across the line was livewire West Aussie Rhys McNally (Stratco Holden) ahead of Gerard McLeod who placed fourth in the Macmahon Mining Holden to record his career-best result.“I missed a gear,” McLeod lamented, “and that cost me two positions. I’m pleased for Macmahon but I’m a little disappointed that we didn’t do better. Still, it’s our best result all year and it’s encouraging.”Shadowing McLeod was Kim Jane in the Adrenalin Holden ahead of Ryan Hansford (Truckline FG) in sixth, Ryal Harris (LCE FG) seventh, Nathan Pretty (Monster Energy SS) eighth, Andrew Fisher (Jesus All About Life FG) ninth, David Sieders (Mangomedia FG) tenth and Cameron McConville (Bundaberg Rum SS) storming to 11th from 18th.Young-gun Matthew Chahda was the surprise charging from 25th position to 16th to take out the SS Inductions Hard Charger Award and $500 cash on debut. Peter Burnitt took out the Masters Award after taking out 23rd overall for the Round. Todd Zani walked away with the Armor All Best Presented Award for his EZE ATM Holden and Murphy Racing took out the Team Award for their great result with Craig Dontas and Nathan Pretty. The V8 Utes will head to the Sydney Telstra 500 in two weeks’ time (30th November – 2nd December), to decide the winner of the 2012 Auto One V8 Ute Racing Series – protected by Armor All
