Team GB learn to survive the Wild Arctic

Media duo learn the key survival skills necessary to endure the Arctic Lapland Rally

Media duo, and only British contestants in the Arctic Lapland Rally, Daily Mail sports columnist Des Kelly and Skys motor sport expert Tony Jardine spent today experiencing first-hand the hazardous conditions of competing in the Wild Arctic and how to survive the sub-zero temperatures and fierce landscape with an intense survival training course.

Taking place on top of a frozen lake outside Rovaniemi, temperatures hit -21 degrees centigrade as Jardine and Kelly were tasked with developing essential survival skills such as making a fire in the snow and how to shelter from the harsh environment.

Its incredible how much can go wrong if we can get stuck at some point on the rally, commented co-drive Kelly. With the bitter cold, metres of snow and not another soul in sight, things can get really bad, really quickly. It was great to learn some of these survival skills, although I am hoping I wont have to use them!

Jardine and Kelly also had their first experience in the Production Class Subaru N14, provided by Rally Promotion Finland, as they took to the stage for the shakedown. Jardine said: It was great to get a feel for the car. We had a successful shakedown and, although we are up against some of the best rally drivers in the world, we head into tomorrows rally feeling quietly confident and proud to be flying the flag for Team GB.
