RSF Zip Young Guns squad strengthens driver line up
FOR 2013 KART SEASONCadet stars Dean Macdonald and Josh Smith join squad along with Mini Max rookie Alfie BrownThe Racing Steps Foundation-backed Zip Young Guns kart racing team has added three new drivers to its roster for 2013.Stepping up to the Super One KF3 and Rotax series with the British squad are 2012 MSA British Cadet Champion Dean Macdonald, aged 12, from Kelty, Fife, Josh Smith (13) from Arnside, Cumbria, and Alfie Brown (12) from Wimbledon, South London.The three rising stars join 2012 CIK-FIA European KF2 Champion and MSA Super One British KF2 title winner Ben Barnicoat (16) from Chesterfield, Derbyshire, and UK and international KF2 front-runner Ricky Collard (16) from Eversley, Hampshire, in the RSF Zip Young Guns line-up for the new season.Macdonald, who became Scotland's youngest cadet champion at the age of eight, beat new team-mate and season-long rival Smith to the 2012 British cadet title at Whilton Mill in September to become the last driver to take the British crown using the Comer engine.Smith, the 2011 Super One cadet 'Rookie of the Year', finished third in the 2012 MSA championship behind Macdonald and Vice-Champion Enaam Ahmed. Smith was also runner-up in the rival 2012 Super One cadet series.Brown, a regular club and UK championship race winner in cadets, competed in the Formula Kart Stars Mini Max Championship in 2012, making his mark with second place at the Nutts Corner round in August to become the youngest podium finisher in the series' history. He ended the year in eighth place in the championship.The South Londoner, who also won two FKS 'True Grit' awards in his maiden year in the class along with the Brazilian Cup, has been coached by the RSF's former U18s World Karting Champion and 2012 Formula Renault 2.0 NEC Champion Jake Dennis.All three will race ART TS-01 chassis in the Super One KF3 and Rotax classes -Macdonald in Mini Max, while Smith and Brown, who make the age limit of 13 during the year, will compete in Junior Max.Meanwhile Barnicoat and Collard return for a second year in the KF2 class.ART Grand Prix works driver and KF2 team leader Barnicoat will race in the WSK Masters and Euro Series, the South Garda Winter Cup, and the CIK-FIA European and World Championships prior to single-seater testing later in the year.Collard will return to Super One KF2 in the UK with the RSF Zip Young Guns team in parallel with the WSK Euro Series, the South Garda Winter Cup and the CIK-FIA European and World Championships.
