P1 Motorsport Driver Displays Championship Credentials
Ernesto Viso (Cambridge/Caracas, Venezuela) displayed his intent to fight for overall Championship Class honours this season by securing the second quickest time in the official British Formula 3 test at Croft Circuit today.
The reigning British Formula 3 Scholarship Champion, racing for Wymondham-based P1 Motorsport, ended the two-day test just 1/10th of a second off the quickest time and declared himself "very happy" with his day's work:
Said Ernesto:
"I'm really happy that we're on the pace at just the second F3 test of the season. The team has worked really hard over the winter and we've had no problems over the two days of the test. We have gone through a set test programme and achieved a lot, although I know there is still more time to come, which is encouraging."
From its introduction in 1966, the British Formula 3 Championship has produced wave after wave of talented young drivers, a great number of whom have gone onto the very highest echelons of the sport, namely Formula One. The likes of Nelson Piquet, Ayrton Senna, Mika Hakkinen, Rubens Barrichello and Johnny Herbert - to name but a few - all lifted the British F3 crown en route to stellar Grand Prix Racing careers. The 2004 Avon Tyres British Formula 3 Championship will undoubtedly set another crop of talented young drivers on the road to F1. As Ernesto added:
"The competition is going to be really tough this year, that's for sure. There are many drivers who are capable of winning races - amongst others, Nelson Piquet Jnr. However my goal this year is to work with my team to do the very best we can and, hopefully, that will be enough to set me up as a title contender from the outset."
Ernesto's teammate at P1 Motorsport this season, talented Irish driver Adam Carroll, was sixth quickest on Wednesday, but encountered problems today, which bumped him down to 10th quickest overall.
The British Formula 3 field moves to Brands Hatch next Wednesday 24th March for the Championship's Media Day, before the final official test of the season at Donington Park. The 2004 British Formula 3 Championship kicks off at Donington Park Circuit in Derbyshire over the weekend of 3rd/4th April.
