Double Ginetta GT Supercup Win For Breeze At Donington

Total Control Racing claimed its second and third wins of the 2013 Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup at Donington Park National Circuit over the weekend, 20th/21st April, courtesy of defending champion Carl Breezealthough a disappointing driveshaft failure before round six soured the event.Qualifying on pole position for Saturdays fourth round, the 2012 title winner was in impressive form as he lapped almost 0.3 seconds faster than his closest rival. At the beginning of the weekends first race, Breeze made a superb getaway and led throughout despite heavy pressure from Tom Ingram.Keeping the second placed man in check, the TCR racer didnt put a wheel wrong and dealt well with a Safety Car re-start on lap 12, due to a stranded car at the Old Hairpin, to take his second win of the year by 0.3 seconds.Starting Sunday mornings fifth round from pole again, Breeze once more headed home Ingram in another hotly contested encounter. On lap eight at Redgate, Ingram tried an impossibly late dive up the inside but Breeze held his nerve superbly and maintained the lead. Under intense pressure to the chequered flag on lap 16, the Kings Lynn driver took the win by just 0.2 seconds.Sadly for Breeze and TCR, the champion wasnt able to take up his place on the grid for round six when a driveshaft failurefrustratingly a new part that was fitted to his Ginetta G55 following Saturdays raceoccurred on his way from the assembly area.

Carl did a fantastic job as always this weekend, he was under massive pressure in both races but he dealt with it superbly, said team principal Lee Brookes, We couldnt believe the driveshaft failure before race three, we only fitted a brand new one on Saturday night as we thought the other one was getting a bit old. The new one only did one race before it failed so were gutted for Carl.Team-mates Mark Davies and Jamie Orton had a mixed weekend which didnt begin as either would have wanted in qualifying. Davies had to settle for the sixth fastest time while Orton was ninth after an unfortunate spin into the gravel during the session. This became eighth on the grid for round four though due to a penalty for Matt Nicoll-Jones.Huddersfields Davies initially slipped to seventh in the opener but soon became embroiled in a tight three-way fight over fifth place. Running in sixth at mid-distance, he was pushed back a spot by Nicoll-Jones on the ninth tour at Redgate but then gained a place back prior to the Safety Car. He then grabbed fifth on the final tour to see off Nicoll-Jones by 0.4 seconds at the flag.Orton had a fairly uneventful first race, battling back from 11th on lap one into ninth position by the finish. In round five the Londoner made a marked step forward with a sensational opening lap, slicing his way through into the top six from ninth on the grid to get ahead of Davies.Running nose-to-tail, the team-mates were incredibly evenly matched and both lapped within just 0.1 seconds of race winner Breezes pace. Closing on the group ahead, the TCR drivers pressed on and on lap 13 Orton was able to take advantage of an opportunity at Coppice to dive past Pepe Massot for fifth. Massot then had to defend heavily from Davies but kept the other TCR man in seventh.Round six on Sunday afternoon was the least successful of the weekend for the team with Davies retiring on lap four in the gravel and Orton having to settle for ninth place after an early excursion onto the grass.Mark and Jamie had a mixed weekend to be honest, commented Brookes, They both had the pace, they showed that in the second race, but a couple of incidents just cost them. Apart from Marks DNF in the third race though, they both scored strongly which is the important thing.Clio Cup racer Smith rounds out weekend positively with top 10In the Renault UK Clio Cup at Donington, TCR made positive steps forward with second year saloon car racer Rob Smith who put a tough qualifying session and unfortunate retirement from race one behind him to climb through from 17th on the grid into the top 10 in round four.Having been mystified at a lack of pace during pre-event testing on Thursday, 18th April, and then again in qualifying, team and driver worked hard to find a solution but werent able to tell if the changes worked in Saturdays encounter when Smiths Clio was assaulted at Redgate on lap one. Sustaining significant damage, he did manage to tour back to the pits but retirement was inevitable.Focused on securing as many points as possible in race two, the Telford driver made a sensational start and quickly climbed into 14th position before leaping into the top 10 on lap four. Running some very competitive lap times, only 0.3 seconds away from podium pace, Smith was edged back to 13th in the midfield scrap but soon recovered and at the halfway point he was back up to 11th position.Grabbing 10th place on lap 10, Smith piled on the pressure to Josh Wakefield over the final few laps but just couldnt carve open the chance he needed. Only 0.2 seconds split the duo at the flag, a great drive from the TCR man.Not finishing the first race obviously cost us a bit in the championship, Rob was just unlucky not to get any further than the first corner and the contact he had caused a fair bit of bodywork damage and broke the rear axle, said Brookes, His race pace was strong in race two though, we definitely made steps forward from qualifying, and he drove really well to come through into the top 10.Thruxton Circuit in Hampshire hosts the next instalment of Michelin Ginetta GT Supercup and Renault UK Clio Cup action a fortnight from now on 4th/5th May.
