Danish Formula Renault 3.5 star and McLaren Young Driver Development Program member Kevin Magnussen pulled out two stunning drives to take the championship lead at Motorland Aragon in Spain last weekend.
After setting the fastest time every day during the week in testing, Magnussen qualified on pole for Saturdays race and then led flag to flag to take victory by nearly 20 seconds.
The result - coupled with his pair of second places from Monza - pushed Magnussen to the championship lead.
Its only the start of the championship but its still important to go out and score big, Magnussen said. I had a very good car today and I made sure I didnt make any mistakes.
Despite only finishing ninth in Sundays race, that result by Magnussen was even more impressive. A fuel pressure problem in qualifying caused the DAMS driver to start from the back of the grid.
The task of charging through the pack was made tougher by torrential rain and the fact that Sundays race had been shortened from 45 to 30 minutes due to an oil consumption problem technical issue found by series officials on Saturday.
The Danish ace was stunning en route to ninth place by the chequered flag to grab an important two additional points.
After two rounds and four races in 2013, Magnussen leads the championship on 63 points ahead of Stoffel Vandoorne (59) and Arthur Pic (35).
The next round of the Formula Renault 3.5 championship takes place on the streets of Monaco on May 26.
