Tom Bradshaw claimed his maiden Porsche Club Championship with Pirelli race wins at Brands Hatch on Saturday May 4ththe Hartech Boxster S racer delivering a perfect result over the day with two wins, two pole positions and two fastest laps. His feat was matched by Class Two pacesetter John McCullagh, who raced in the top ten overall in both races and brought his Car Tech and Car Motorsport 968 CS home fifth overall in race one.QualifyingA chill wind blew over Brands Hatch for qualifying early on Saturday morning, but the heat was on at the top of the times as Bradshaw set the pacethe only driver to duck under the 52-second threshold, emphasising his superiority by setting more than one time under that mark. Mark Sumpter was second quickest in his Paragon 964 C2, all the lead runners working hard to find track-space with 32-cars filling the 1.2 mile Indy circuit, Pete Morris third ahead of Mark McAleer and Sumpter.I wasnt sure what everyone else was doing and had to do a lot of running to get a clear space, said Bradshaw, its such a short circuit with so many cars on it. The car felt spot on and Im looking forward to trying to get it off the line and go for that first win.McCullagh dominated Class Two, fifth overall early on and finishing eighth at the end of the session, well clear of class pursuers Mark Koeberle and Brian Robinson. The car is going well and Im really enjoying it, said McCullagh. It would be nice to take two wins after our dramas at Donington, but Ill take it one step at a time today.Race OneSumpter made a good start, but so did poleman Bradshaw and he held the inside line through the first corner to take the lead. Behind, a fast-starting Adrian Slater looked inside Morris, who moved across, the two cars touching, Morris slowing and pitting with a rear puncture later in the lap.McAleer was another quick starter and made the most of Morris and Slaters contact to move into third, but at the front a series of fastest laps from Bradshaw saw him rapidly open up a gap of over three seconds. McAleer got past Sumpter into Druids on lap four, but the battle at the front was soon changed by the appearance of the Safety Car at the end of lap six. With Chris Dyers Cayman having been tipped off at Clearways the Safety Car unfortunately picked up the second place car, and once the errant Cayman had been retrieved and the order behind the car sorted out, if was five laps at slow speed before racing resumed. Bradshaw once more started to open a gap, McAleer just ahead of Sumpter and Slater, before another Safety Car episode with a car off at Paddock Hill Bend.Once racing resumed as they started lap 18 McAleer was right with Bradshaw, but the long time leader was able to ease away again, before a late charge by McAleer saw him again right with the lead Hartech Boxster with a lap to goBradshaw responding with the races fastest lap on the final tour to take his maiden Porsche Club Championship victory.Mark Sumpter made a good start and was alongside me, said Bradshaw, I was thinking I had lost the lead but I was able to hold on going into Paddock and had just enough room to out-brake him. Mark McAleer was pushing like crazy in the final laps and I was worried I didnt have much left in the car, but that was a bit of a wake up call and I held on. The car was great, I need to make another half-decent start next race as well.I was dicing with Mark Sumpter at the start which let Tom get away a bit, said McAleer, and without the Safety Car Im not sure we would have caught him. I was pushing hard hoping he was going to make a mistake, and on the last lap I could see a gaggle of cars we were catching and I was thinking that if we could get amongst them I might have a chance, but the flag came out. He was very consistent but that was good fun.In the final laps the top ten had fragmented into a series of two-car battles, and Sumpter led Paragon team-mate Slater over the line to claim third and fourth. A highlight was the performance of Class Two leader McCullagh, running fifth overall for much of the race and claiming that position at the end despite the close attention of Marcus Carniels Boxster in the latter part of the race,The first safety car was at a good time, said Sumpter, it put us all back together. But on the restart from the second one I had a slight misfire on the restart, which cost me time but also cost Adrian as he couldnt pass me. Then it was us two running together, the Safety Cars meant we didnt have the backmarkers as so much of a factorwould be nice to race right through next time and have the backmarkers to work through and maybe take advantage of.
I got a good start and I took advantage of the tangle at the first corner, said McCullagh, and from then it was pretty straightforward. The car went really well and I enjoyed that, I had a good race with Marcus Carniel in the final lapshe was much quicker on the run up to Druids but after that my car was good round the rest of the lap.Kevin Harrison just claimed seventh having got past Paul Winter into Druids and then holding off the latters 996, while the top ten was rounded off the battle between James Hilliard and Richard Ellis.Race TwoSumpter got his 964 C2 away perfectly at the start of race two and slotted in front of Bradshaw to lead the huge field into Paddock Hill Bend. Morris lost a place off the line, but lanced down the inside into Druids to take third and head Slater and McAleer across the line at the end of the first lap.The Safety Car was out again after two laps with a car beached at Druids with suspension damage, and it was the start of lap eight before the field were released, Sumpter and Bradshaw easing away, the latter taking the lead by going inside Sumpter into Druids on lap nine. Behind, Slater was into third with a move inside Morris at Surtees.Bradshaw immediately set the races fastest lap to that point on the first full lap of racing, but couldnt shake off Sumpter. The lead duo where then quickly amongst the back-markers, the advantage swinging one way and then the other with Bradshaw seemingly able to open a small gap with a clear track in front of him, Sumpter using his experience to gain time through traffic and close right in.The leaders encountered David Botterill as they rounded Druids on lap 20, the Strasse racer sensibly holding a steady line as Bradshaw went to the inside and Sumpter elected to go all the way round the outside making it three-wide through the cornerthe lead pair emerging in the same order. Well clear of the rest of the field, Bradshaw just held on as they lanced through traffic for his second win of the day, Sumpter ensuring the Hartech Boxster was pushed all the way. That was a very busy race, a real challenge, Mark was just so good through the traffic, said Bradshaw. I could open a gap but as soon as we got near a gaggle of cars he was back on my boot lidit was very cat-and-mouse, it felt like the race was 55 laps long not 25! The day couldnt have gone any better, I just have to thank the team and everyone involved. When we got to traffic it was lots of it! said Sumpter, It was a great race, I was trying to get the backmarkers to go one way so I could got the other. That was a real race, Id rather of won it of course but it was exciting and really enjoyable.Morris was back into third after a move inside Slater into Paddock Hill Bend on lap 17, and eased out a small gap by the end to take a podium finish after his early dramas in race one. Slater took his second fourth-placed finish of the day, heading McAleer across the line. Carniel claimed sixth, holding off Hilliard and Ellis.I had a cracking race with Adrian Slater, said Morris. We werent going to catch the leaders, they had the pace today, but I was aiming for the top three and wanted the points. It was a bit like an endurance race with all the traffic!McCullagh once more led Class Two all the way, running in the lower part of the top ten overall well clear of his class rivals. Robinson was second ahead of Koeberle, with Sagan Cownemaking his race debut at Brands Hatchtook his second fourth position finish of the day.Im delightedthis has been a really good day, said McCullagh. The car had been great and I got a good start in that race, a bit cautious in the first corners just trying to keep out of trouble. After that I had a clear runreally pleased.Porsche Club Championsip Round 3: 1 Tom Bradshaw (Boxster S) 25 laps; 2 Mark McAleer (996 C2) +0.826s; 3 Mark Sumpter (964 C2); 4 Adrian Slater (964 C2); 5 John McCullagh (968 CS); 6 Marcus Carniel (Boxster S); 7 Kevin Harrison (964 C2); 8 Paul Winter (996 C2); 9 James Hilliard (968 CS); 10 Richard Ellis (993 C2).
