Chinese racing sensation Marchy LEE Yin-Kin of Team Meritus was victorious in the first ever race held at the Bahrain International Circuit. Lee clinched the first round of Formula BMW Asia, which is a supporting event to the inaugural Bahrain F1 Grand Prix. Kyong-Ouk YOU (Korea) was second, followed by Hanss LIN (Taipei).After slipping to second at the start, Lee re-took the lead then put his head down to pull together a string of fastest laps to stretch his lead to 10 seconds. "My start was fine, I didn't do anything wrong, but Hanss (LIN) had a very good start. I didn't want to risk anything on the first corner, and I knew I had plenty of time to pass him later, so I let him through and stayed on his tail," said Lee after the race. "I found my opportunity at the end of the straight on the first lap, when I carried more speed through the previous corner and easily pulled alongside him to get past," Lee added. From then on it was just a push for the finish where Lee crossed the line 6.845secs ahead of You.Meritus' other driver, young Malaysian rookie Nik Iruwan had to re-learn how to drive the Formula BMW Asia single seater during the race, when he discovered that his front brake bias was all wrong throughout practice and qualifying but was fixed before the race. "It took me a few laps to figure out how hard to brake and how to release the pedal as I turned in, so I over-shot a few times and dropped to 16th," said Iruwan.Once he got the hang of it though he began taking places back easily. "I was really happy with the end of the race, even though I finished 11th, because my times were dropping a lot as I got used to the brakes. I'm feeling really confident for the race tomorrow. The BMW coach and my team Meritus gave me very good advice and really helped motivate me and give me confidence," added Iruwan.
