Tom Bradshaw and John McCullagh continued their domination of their respective classes with two wins each as the Porsche Club Championship with Pirelli visited Donington Park. Both had to work hard for their points hauls, Bradshaw twice having to find a way past the fast starting Adrian Slater, while McCullagh was challenged by his class rivals in both races.QualifyingBradshaw and Slater traded quickest times for much of the mornings qualifying session, the Hartech Boxster S of Bradshaw just coming out on top by mere hundredths of a second. Slater was second, his Paragon 964 C2 one of a number of models benefitting from a rule change allowing them to run on 18-inch wheels for the first time. That was a good session, said Bradshaw, its very close between us. We changed a couple of bits with the car and I still think there is a bit more time to come. A good start to the day.We were looking at data and working on what would be a great lap round here, explained Slater, and though that didnt feel great, it was certainly a quick lap. My last lap but one was well up on time before I had to go inside someone at the chicane, but that can happen.Pete Morris was third quickest at the circuit where he won both races at the opening meeting of the year in April, with Slaters team-mate Mark Sumpter fourth.Race OneSlater got the best start as Bradshaws Boxster squirmed under acceleration, the 964 sliding across to lead into Redgate, team-mate Sumpter into third behind Bradshaw. By lap two Slater was already having to be defensive, and Bradshaw got inside him at McLeans on lap three to take the lead.Sumpters tenure of third came to an end as a damper problem on the rear of his 964 caused handling issues and he slipped down the order, Morris moving into third with Craig Wilkins, in Morris old car, and Mark McAleer in close attendance. Bradshaw set a brace of fastest laps as he eased open a gap over Slater, who in turn was clear of the rest.In the final laps Bradshaw not only had the backmarkers to deal with but also a track made slippery by an oil spill, and he controlled his pace to take his third win in a row, Slater taking second to claim his first podium finish of the season. Morris took third ahead of Wilkins, McAleer one of a number to fall foul of the oil and lose time after a big slide.
I gave it a few too many revs off the line, so Adrian was able to get by pretty easily, said Bradshaw. I was able to get past him, and then I had a gap and was trying to go as slowly as I could without being caught, especially with the oil down later in the race.It was a good start, said Salter, I tried to back him up into the others, but he was working out where his car was good and got past. Once he had a gap and the fluid was down it got really hard and I was happy to settle for second.I enjoyed that, said Morris, I feel sorry for Mark McAleer, I hit some oil and understeered off, but he went right over the grass. Happy to take thirdbut more to come for later!McCullagh had to work hard to claim Class Two, Brian Robinsons similar 968 CS a threat until an exhaust issue forced him out, while Ben Eacock was also right there. That was a tough race, said McCullagh, I had a good start but then lost places in the first corner and had to fight back. Brian and Ben were right there, an enjoyable race and the car is quite competitive now so it is always fun to duel with the other guys.Race TwoAgain it was Slater who made the best start, Bradshaw once more into second with Sumpter, Wilkins and McAleer right behind, Morris having gone way off circuit over the Donington grass after a touch on the opening lap. Slater was under pressure from the off, having to defend from Bradshaw, the others closing up as the lead pair duelled. The lead battle came to a head into Coppice on lap six, Bradshaw just getting inside Slater, who found himself off-line and out of line as the close following cars tailgated Bradshaw and went pastthe leader dropping from first to fifth in the one corner. Bradshaw again showed his pace with fastest laps as he set about opening a gap over the chasing group, Wilkins and McAleer right with Sumpter.Bradshaw eased it home to take his second win of the day, Sumpter second with Wilkins recording his first Porsche Club Championship podium in third. McAleer claimed fourth ahead of Marcus Carniel and Richard Ellis.A good weekend, said Bradshaw, the car has been spot on and that was a bit more of a race, Adrian was making things difficult for me but I just managed to nip past him. The backmarkers seemed to work for me a couple of times, and overall there were no issues and it was a smooth raceIm over the moon.Happy with that, we dont seem to have entirely fixed the car, said Sumpter, but we have transferred the problem to the side that matters less. It wasnt so good for Adrian at Coppice thoughI followed Tom past him and wanted him to tuck back in behind me, but there was a train of cars and he got hung out to dry a bit. The car feels good on the new wheels and the lap times were consistent. That was fun, said Wilkins, though I have to apologise as when I came down through the Craner Curves behind Mark Sumpter and Pete, I had a good run on themthen sadly Pete ended up on the grass, I didnt intentionally take out the owner of my car! There are some good experienced guys out there, Im having to brush up on my racecraft.McCullagh matched Bradshaws win tally for the day in taking Class Two, and went one better for the season by recording his fifth win from six races. Mark Koeberle was second ahead of the refettled Robinson. Its been a great day, said McCullagh. Some very close racing and Mark Koeberle really kept the pressure on there. This is going to be a tight championship as Tom Bradshaw keeps winning as well.Porsche Club Championship Round Five: 1 Tom Bradshaw (Boxster S) 20 laps; 2 Adrian Slater (964 C2) +5.670s; 3 Pete Morris (996 C2); 4 Craig Wilkins (996 C2); 5 Richard Ellis (993 C2); 6 Mark Sumpter (964 C2); 7 Marcus Carniel (Boxster S); 8 Steve Cheetham (Boxster S); 9 Gary Marsh (996 C2); 10 John McCullagh (968 CS).
