Two poles, a win and a third place for Danish McLaren junior in Belgium
Danish Formula Renault 3.5 championship leader Kevin Magnussen more than doubled his Formula Renault 3.5 championship lead with a dominant weekend at Spa-Francorchamps in Beligum last weekend.
The McLaren Young Driver Development Programme member entered the weekend with a 14-point lead in the World Series by Renault Championship but finished the Spa-Francorchamps event leading the series by 29 points after scoring a win and third place in the two races.
Magnussen showed stunning speed in qualifying taking pole for both days.
In Saturdays race he charged into the lead off the start and held a handy gap over Antonio Felix da Costa. A mid-race safety car reigned Magnussens lead back in and he came under attack from da Costa after the restart. The Portuguese rival challenged for the lead and made a move on lap 15 of 21 but could not pull it off.
Sundays race was more of a battle. He was third on the opening lap after a disappointing start and actually had to defend on the opening lap.
His DAMS team pulled off a smart move to pit him early and a series of stunning laps (Magnussen was consistently the fastest driver through Spas challenging Sector 2) to emerge right on the tail of race leader Stoffel Vandoorne after all the leaders had stopped.
In the later stages of the race, Magnussen was unable to challenge Vandoorne and actually lost a spot to former teammate Will Stevens.
However, Magnussens incredible consistency has earned him a handy lead in the championship. He is the only driver in the series to have finished in the points in every race so far this season.
The next race in the championship will be the Moscow Raceway event in Russia on June 22-23.
