Gregor Ramsay showed some stunning form on his Formula Renault Eurocup debut at the famous Belgian Grand Prix venue of Spa-Francorchamps, but the 16-year-old Scot ended the weekend lucky to escape serious injury after a ferocious 130mph accident.
The crash happened at the beginning of the second lap, as Ramsay accelerated out of the La Source hairpin in the middle of a trio of cars that were running three-abreast. Running down to the legendary Eau Rouge, Ramsay was pulling clear of Stefan Wackerbauer when the German tagged his left-rear tyre as he turned in. This sent Gregor into a spin and a heavy impact with the barriers on his left side, while Wackerbauer, also out of control, smashed into him from the right.Gregor was knocked unconscious and was taken to the medical centre and then to hospital, but was back at the track later in the evening.Up to then it had been a highly encouraging weekend for Ramsay, who usually competes in the Formula Renault ALPS series but who had been entered in the Eurocup round as a wild card runner.Due to differences in testing regulations between Formula Renault ALPS and the Eurocup, Gregor and the Euronova Racing team that runs his car were forced to sit out the first free practice session, and the second session was on a damp track, meaning he ran on wet-weather tyres as a circuit-learning exercise.Ramsay qualified on the 11th row for race one, and raced strongly to 17thhis first time on the track in dry conditions. Then, in Sunday morning qualifying for race two, he went seventh fastest in his group, with a time that would have put him third had he been in the other group. Remarkably, he set the fastest time overall in the first and third sectors, and would have been on for a front-of-the-grid start had he not run wide in the middle sector. On my second-to-last lap it was really good, said Gregor, but I just got too close to the car in front at the fast double-left bend of Pouhon and lost all my grip and ran wide.
Then in the race, Wackerbauer basically tried to come around my outside into Eau Rouge but it was never going to come off. He touched my left-rear wheel and sent me into the barriers. It was a great shame, but Im pleased to be OK and weve shown some really encouraging form for next weekend.Ramsay, who is backed by lottery winners Colin and Chris Weir, will be back in action at Spa next weekend, for the third round of the Formula Renault ALPS series, but will need a new chassis tub to replace the one destroyed in his accident. Euronova will do their best to have the car ready for next weekend, he said. If they do, Im pretty sure well be doing well.
