ADD Motorsports driver Mitchell Gilbert delivered his best result of the yearbut was left cursing more bad luck. The Twickenham racer was delighted to finish Race 2 at the Red Bull Ring in 12th position, his highest in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship so far.
But a rear wing collapse and a crash in the other races prevented it from being a weekend to remember for all the right reasons. It left the 18-year-old with mixed emotions after leaving the Austrian circuit, although a real feeling a big result is just around the corner. He said: The 12th position wasnt an amazing performance to be honest, but it was a big step forward. Its difficult. This is my worst season in 12 years, Im used to being up there at the top. We know what were capable of, yet just cant seem to put it all together.
Its not helping having such bad luck at the moment, the rear wing collapsed in Race 1 and that never happens. But qualifying was better than recent weeks and there are a lot of positives to take away from the weekend.Mitchell was happy to be up with the front drivers when he finished fourth in practice, and this carried on into the first qualifying round when he finished 11th.
However, Race 1 started in disastrous fashion when Mitchell was one of a number of drivers to go over a small kerb on the first corner, leaving his car with a collapsed rear wing.
The Australian driver picked himself up for Race 2 when he finished in his highest position this season. But Race 3 turned out to be just as frustrating as the first race, as a crash on the second lap left him unable to finish. He said: In the first qualifying race I finished 11th, but I could have been fifth or sixth. I just made too many mistakes. Its still much better than previous weeks, but I know I can be doing so much better.
In Race 1 There was a bit of a kerb on the first corner and I went over it a little bit and my rear wing collapsed. It happened to quite a few of us. The rear wing pretty much never collapses, so it was just another one of those things that pretty much sums up the season so far.The really annoying thing is that after the race they took the kerb away for the rest of the weekend. I was going at a pretty good speed, so it was frustrating.
Then I made a mistake in Race 3, crashed into somebody and it cost me again. Mitchell now turns his attention to some testing before the next race at Norisring in July.He added: We have got testing in Germany tomorrow and we will try to do things to get me further up the grid. This weekend was an improvement, but we feel theres a lot more to come.
