American glory in P1 Superstock season opener

American powerboat racing stars Andy Biddle and Tracy Blumenstein mastered the unpredictable waters of the Humber estuary this weekend to record their first UK success in the Hull Grand Prix of the Sea.Acclimatising quickly to the East Yorkshire conditions, the Jersey Boys recorded a victory in Sunday's race, a second place on Saturday and the fastest lap of the weekend to edge out Yorkshire-born racer and former P1 SuperStock champion John Wilson for top spot on the podium.Flashes of bright sunshine over the Humber estuary enticed large crowds to line the waterfront to cheer on the local entry, One Hull of a Boat. After solid performances in the first two races the Hull boat rolled during a turn in the early stages of the last race which brought the race to a premature end.The crew of Jonathan Searby and Sam Whitaker were quickly recovered from the water with the safety team reporting no serious injuries to Sam and a minor leg injury sustained by Jonathan who is currently being accessed at the local hospital.Saturday's opening race set the pattern for the weekend with the American duo in the MBY Allam Marine boat vying for dominance with John Wilson and Daisy Coleman in their Pertemps craft. Wilson came out on top in the opening encounter but the boys from New Jersey reversed the fortunes on Sunday in Race 1. Since no championship points were awarded for the final race, final team standings were tied for the Hull Grand Prix of the Sea title so the overall weekend winner was awarded on a count-back of fastest lap achieved by MBY Allam Marine.2011 SuperStock champion John Wilson will be pleased with his weekends work but now knows that he will be hard pressed in the remaining 7 races in Plymouth and Torquay to reel in the early leaders. The two dominating teams demonstrated differing driving styles. Winning pilot Andy Biddle said "In the first race we attempted to drive like the Brits but didnt feel comfortable with this and reverting to our own style on the second day paid dividends." Wilson was full of compliments for the American duo and commented "They learnt very quickly and a great battle is emerging. I will welcome more challenging sea conditions for the remaining rounds."The Oval Team of Nick Williams and Jonny Allbut were unable to match the pace they set in practice in the three races but they will come away from Humberside with sufficient positives for them to look forward to the rest of the season. New SuperStock Sponsors Cornhill FX were in town to see husband and wife crew David and Kirsty Toozs-Hobson perform solidly all weekend in what was their first outing in the P1 Panther.James Norvill, who pilots the P1 Marine foundation boat in both the UK and USA series, will head off to his next race at Daytona beach in two weeks time confident that he can make a mark on both sides of the Atlantic. The next round of the UK Championship will be in Plymouth on 28 -30 June.
