Newman/Haas file for INDY500

Newman/Haas Racing has filed an entry for the 88th Indianapolis 500, returning to the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing" for the first time since 1995.

Access Motorsports also filed an entry for the race, scheduled for May 30 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Entries must have been postmarked by midnight, March 31, with additional entries continuing to arrive at Indy Racing League(R) headquarters in Indianapolis. An entry list will be released shortly.

The driver, car number, car name, chassis and engine of the Newman/Haas entry will be announced later. Mark Shambarger is the chief mechanic, while Jim McGee and Brian Lisles are the team managers. A backup car was included on the entry.

Newman/Haas has competed in 13 previous Indianapolis 500-Mile Races with such drivers as Mario Andretti, Michael Andretti, Nigel Mansell and Paul Tracy.

The team's best finish in the race is second by Mario Andretti in 1985 and Michael Andretti in 1991. Mario Andretti won the pole in a Newman/Haas car in 1987.

Access co-owner Greg Ray will drive the team's No. 13 Panoz G Force/Honda/Firestone entry, with a backup entered. The car name will be announced later. Jamie Nanny is the chief mechanic, and Ted Bitting is team manager.

1999 Indy Racing League IndyCar(R) Series champion Ray will attempt to make his eighth Indianapolis 500 start. His best finish is eighth last year.

Ray has produced many strong qualifying efforts at Indianapolis since his debut in 1997. He won the MBNA Pole for the 2000 race, and started second in 1998, 1999 and 2001.
