Elf sponsor last Renault 5 race

Long-time Renault UK Motorsport partner ELF has been confirmed as the headline sponsor of the ‘last ever’ Renault 5 race - to be staged at Thruxton in Hampshire on 29th/30th May.

The final competitive outing for the cars – which will now be billed as the ‘Renault ELF 5 Celebration Race’ – will be an amazing sight for fans of motorsport young and old and a grid of at least 20 cars comprising Renault 5 TS and GT Turbo models is expected.

During recent months a pool of around 30 cars which could realistically take part in the race have been sourced and organiser Simon North is hopeful a whole host of former competitors from the glory years of Renault 5 racing will be involved in the event.

Among the famous names from Renault 5 championship history who have been contacted include multiple Renault 5 TL Champion Neil McGrath, 1987 Renault 5 GT Turbo Champion Barrie ‘Whizzo’ Williams and the winner of the first ever Renault 5TL race at Brands Hatch, Kent, in 1974, Maggie Anderson.

Emma Carter, Corporate Communications Executive for ELF, commented: “We’re delighted to be the headline sponsor of the Renault ELF 5 Celebration Race which promises to be a fantastic event – it’s important for ELF to continue its long association with Renault.

“We’ve been involved with Renault UK’s efforts in the British Touring Car Championship, the British Rally Championship, British Formula 3 and, of course, one-make domestic championships such as the current ELF/BTE Lawline Renault Clio Cup and Formula Renault UK Championship. We’re very happy to be an integral part of this special anniversary event.”

The special Renault Festival - incorporating the Renault ELF 5 Celebration Race to mark the 30th anniversary of Renault UK Motorsport - will also feature races from Formula Renault UK, the ELF/BTE Lawline Renault Clio Cup, Ginettas and the International Truck Challenge.
