Character building for Catchpole

A week of burning the midnight oil assured the Corby based Team Catchpole of having both cars on the starting grid at Rockingham Days Thunder Championship.Following last weeks catastrophic smash, team leader Phil Weaver had his first run in his car during Saturday's practice sessions. "It felt so loose and almost undriveable. Like being on ice," said Southampton based Phil. Team mate Mike Luck decided to take things steady, " no heroics, just bedding things in," said the Redditch driver. With showers calling a premature halt to the practice session, qualifying was also lost and the grid was formed from the original untimed session. Luck lined up 17th and Weaver 20th.A morning warm-up preceded Sundays races and brought another crisis after Luck's clutch failed during the 15 minute session. Weaver also decided to make changes, "drastic changes to the back axle and panhard rods. It's taking 20 years of experience to keep me off the wall," he explained.Luck was forced to miss the start of the first race as his clutch was being replaced, while Weaver upheld the teams honour. His race was to be shortlived when he became the innocent victim of a second lap pile-up at Turn One. "I just tried to avoid it all, took to the inside, onto the grass to caught the wall," he said. Luck finally joined in on lap 40, but completed enough laps to be classified in 15th place. "I didn't really have chance to have a go," he said.Although both cars made the start for the second race, it was soon clear that all was not well with the Weaver car. After running in 15th place he retired to the pits. "I am gutted for Jason and the boys who worked so hard to get me out there. You can't be confident in the car when it feels it could just let go," he concluded. After running just outside the top ten for the early part of the race, Luck clinched 10th place after taking Tony King with five laps to go and only 0.5s off eighth. "I really enjoyed it, but spent too long behind Tony," he said.
