Hughes for Carrera Cup-Silverstone

Warren Hughes will race in the fifth and sixth rounds of the Porsche Carrera Cup GB at Silverstone (8/9 May). One of Britain's top drivers, Warren has success in F3, Touring Cars and at Le Mans and will race the VIP car entered by Porsche Cars GB.

"I'm taking this opportunity very seriously and I'm raring to go," says Hughes, who is keen to use his first races of the 2004 season to remind team managers of his ability. In 2003, Hughes scored two BTCC victories for the MG team and raced as high as third at Le Mans before being put out by mechanical failure.

"For me, this is a shop window and I want to remind people what I can do. Silverstone is a track I like very much and I had my first BTCC win there," says the Sunderland-based racer, who has earned the respect of the motor racing industry throughout his 14 years of racing to date.

From being a champion in Formula Ford, Warren progressed to F3 and won the British Grand Prix support race in 1993. He finished fourth in the British F3 Championship in 1994 and 1998 and tested for the Lotus F1 team in 1994. In 2000 he finished second in the Italian F3000 Championship and tested for the Williams F1 team.

"I need to get a feel for the car as soon as possible in testing on Friday and I know the car is good enough to be competitive," he says. "I've driven a lot of different cars, so I should be able to adapt to it quite quickly." Warren has only raced a Porsche once before, when he shared a 911GT3R with John Cleland in a British GT race at Thruxton. "I've got a little idea what to expect," he says. "Certainly my intention is to be on the podium!"
