The third race of the season for the Michelin Porsche Open Series will be at Silverstone on Saturday 15 May. Following a double victory for Richard Chamberlain in the opening races at Croft in mid-May, Rupert Lewin will head to Silverstone evermore determined to take the fight to his rival.
Chamberlain's mighty 935 remains the car to beat in the Open Series, and a comprehensive winter rebuild has kept the car in immaculate condition. In both wet and dry races at Croft, Chamberlain was dominant, but Lewin's stunning 996GT2R has the potential to beat the 935 and Silverstone could be just the sort of circuit for Lewin to challenge his rival.
While the cars of Chamberlain and Lewin dominate the overall race, there will be plenty of battling in the classes and it was Henry Firman who led the way in class two at Croft in his 911GT3 Cup car. He is likely to face more opposition at Silverstone, however, notably from Tony Brown in his newly acquired 964RSR.
Gloucestershire racer Paul Howell had a great weekend at Croft when he took his 993 to a brace of class three wins, while Hong Kong based Martin Dodge (Carrera 996) will be amongst his challengers.
The new class four for 944s was a real hit at Croft, with close racing and sporting competition amongst half a dozen evenly matched cars. Alex Eacock was the pacesetter at Croft with a brace of wins, and even finished a brilliant sixth overall in the wet race. Tim Bevan took the fight to Eacock with a couple of spirited performances, while Nigel Ainge, Andy Brown, Charles Winterhalder and Mark Harris all featured in the class battles.
After the Silverstone race, the Porsche Open racers have only a week before the next double-header event at Snetterton on 22/23 May.
