Oulton Park is the next stop for the Porsche Carrera Cup GB over the weekend of 22/23 May for the seventh and eighth races of the season. Tim Harvey (Team RPM) currently heads the championship contest by 22 points, having won four of the six races to date.
The challenging Cheshire track is one of the most popular on the calendar with the drivers and it is an event that Harvey relishes. "Oulton is one of my favourites circuits," he says. The added twist of having his old touring car rival Alain Menu in the field driving the VIP car from Porsche Cars GB will give the meeting extra significance for Harvey.
However, in championship terms it is Richard Westbrook who represents the biggest threat to Harvey right now. Having recently changed teams to Red Line Racing, Westbrook, who has won twice this year, is buzzing at the prospect of going back to Oulton having raced their for the first time in the Carrera Cup races last September. "I just absolutely loved the circuit," said Westbrook. "It's a real driver's circuit and it has got real character."
Another driver hoping for big things at Oulton is Jonathan Fildes (TCR), who lies third in the championship standings. The Irish racer has been consistently in the points so far, and has been a winner at Oulton Park in previous seasons. Meanwhile, the circuit has good memories for Jason Templeman (Team VLR), as it was at the track last autumn that he scored his first Carrera Cup victory.
Currently in the top six placings are Chris Cooper (Team Parker Racing) and Nigel Rice (Red Line Racing). However, Cooper has only limited experience of Oulton Park. "I've never raced on the Island circuit before," he says. But it’s a fast, flowing place where these cars can really stretch their legs!"
Also in the top 10 heading for Cheshire are Andy and Gary Britnell (Motorbase Performance), Jason Young (Red Line Racing) and Marcus Thomas (Team VLR).
However, the big battle is likely to be between Harvey and Westbrook, with Menu as the wild card and Fildes, Templeman, Cooper and Rice all battling to get into the lead contest.
Provisional championship points after round six:
1 Harvey 112; 2 Westbrook 90; 3 Fildes 88; 4 Templeman 76; 5 Cooper 64; 6 Rice 61; 7 Andy Britnell 60; 8 Young 46; 9 Thomas 31; 10 Gary Britnell 29; etc.
