(SPEEDWAY 1 – SUNDAY REVIEW)

NEW Great Britain boss Alun Rossiter is hoping Craig Cook’s impressive display in the Ben Fund Bonanza at Leicester marks the start of a breakthrough season at the top level of the sport.Cook top-scored for GB with eleven points in the 45-39 win over the Rest of the World in front of a packed crowd at the East Midlands venue, and then won the individual second-half after a heavy last bend crash with Nick Morris from which both riders thankfully emerged unscathed. The Belle Vue and Edinburgh man was joined in double-figures by World Champion Tai Woffinden (10) whilst Chris Harris added 8+1, including victory in the race of the day over Rest of the World skipper Bjarne Pedersen in Heat 8.Morris, with a strong previous record at the circuit, scored 10+1 as the Rest of the World pulled back from ten to six points down with tactical moves, and Pedersen collected 9+1.Rossiter said: “It was a good day, we had great weather and a great crowd, and it was all for a good cause. I got a good reception from everyone and they all seemed happy to have me as manager.“I said to the boys before the meeting we all know what the goal is, it’s the World Cup. We will be doing things with Great Britain this season but the World Cup is the main thing.“If Craig can step up to the mark like that it only needs one of the others such as Danny King or Richie Worrall to do so and then winning at King’s Lynn is a real possibility, and that will be our aim.“It was also good to give some of the boys a bit of experience, and I’m pleased with it all. The atmosphere was good, that was the best thing about it really.”
