CAMPAIGNERS battling to save Oxford Stadium have received a huge boost – with the news that the City Council have designated the site as a conservation area. This gives the Cowley venue further protection having previously been added to the local Heritage Asset Register, and comes as Galliard Homes submit an appeal to the government over the refusal of permission to build 220 homes on the former home of the Cheetahs. Several potential buyers are reported to be interested should the stadium be sold as a going concern.Save Our Stadium Chairman Ian Sawyer said: “This is really excellent news – the stadium being designated a conservation area gives it even more protection from development.“The Oxford public have made it clear that they really want to stadium to stay, and the council are certainly listening to the people that they represent, and doing all they can to help us. With the support we are receiving, the dream of seeing Oxford Stadium return to its former glory is being kept alive.”
