First ever Castle Combe Half-Marathon deemed a great success

Castle Combe Circuit welcomed the inaugural Castle Combe Half-Marathon on Sunday 9th March 2014 and fine weather, a great route and some real camaraderie will undoubtedly have put this event on the HalfMarathon map for 2015 and beyond.

The event was run by 2:09 Events, specialists in the provision of events and training camps for distance runners both in the UK and abroad.

Mike Gratton, Director of 2:09 Events, confirmed: "It is always pleasing to launch a new event and receive such positive comments from the very outset. Many commented on the scenic if challenging route with the final hill out of Castle Combe Village back to the Circuit proving demanding on tired legs. The initial laps of the Circuit were also very favourable with runners enjoying the traffic free environment to warm up their legs before hitting local roads.

"What was also extremely pleasing to hear is the goodwill of locals with many standing at their front doors to cheer and clap the runners as they passed by. Events are made by the people involved and this good feeling and camaraderie has been commented on and obviously very much appreciated as everyone was made to feel so welcome.

"We are already in talks with Castle Combe as we hope to make the Half Marathon an annual event in the Castle Combe calendar and will be liaising closer to the time with Highways and the Police to ensure that the event continues to run as smoothly as possible in the future. We're also hoping that Castle Combe will repeat the fine weather that they gave us on Sunday; we were certainly blessed with perfect conditions and it was a great excuse for the runners to celebrate the finish with ice creams back at the Circuit afterwards!"

The Castle Combe Half Marathon attracted 200 runners and it is anticipated that this will increase to around 1000-1500 runners in the next few years. Many of the local running clubs including the Chippenham Harriers, the Avon Valley Runners and the Corsham Running Club all supported the event. The first male back was David Evans who completed the course in 1hr 17.04mins. The first female home meanwhile was Amy Chalk from Calne who finished in 1hr 22.53mins and was using the event as a training run for the London Marathon which she'll be attempting in April of this year.
