SCUNTHORPE have handed a team place to local youngster Liam Sanderson for the forthcoming National League campaign.Sanderson joins fellow 15-year-old Reece Downes in one of the Stags’ reserve berths having made strong progress since staring out on the club’s training track with Wayne Carter last May.Chairman Richard Hollingsworth said: “Four winters ago we had Steve Worrall and Ashley Birks winning the Support Class in our amateur meetings and they have been Premier League regulars for three seasons so that is why we have to get this type of rider into the National League early and give them the experience that the Steve and Ash received in 2010.“Of course, Liam is much younger and has far less Motocross experience than that pair, but he has time on his side. It will be tough to start with, but that is why we have put the two 15-year-olds at reserve.”(SPEEDWAY 3)
STOKE have named the vastly experienced Jon Armstrong as captain of their new-look 2014 line-up.Armstrong, who previously raced for the Potters at Premier League level, is set to take the No.5 riding position for the Loomer Road club as they bid to make a strong impression on the National League this season.Manager Malcolm Vasey said: “You could argue a strong case for several of our rebuilt team but Jon will do an excellent job for us. He has forgotten more about speedway than some riders ever learn and he is so good when riding with less experienced riders. “He will ride at No.5 for us which means racing with the two reserves in three of his races, and I look forward to having him in that guiding role. I have watched him elsewhere constantly checking on the whereabouts of his partner and making the right moves to assist him whenever appropriate.”
