US motor racing series IndyCar is set to return to Brazil in 2015 with advanced talks underway for a new race in the capital city of Brasilia.
The federal district government on Friday said a five-year deal had been reached for a race to be held at the Autodromo Nelson Piquet from March 8, 2015. IndyCar sanctioned a street race in Sao Paulo from 2010-13 only for that event to end due to financial problems. Mark Miles, chief executive of Hulman & Co., the parent company of IndyCar, said that while an agreement has yet to be formally concluded, talks are progressing toward a deal.
“Brazil has a real history in IndyCar racing and we would like to re-establish a championship race there as early as 2015,” Miles said. “We are engaged in on-going discussions toward this goal and hope suitable arrangements can be finalised soon. There is still a lot of work to be done, but we are encouraged by the efforts from the government of the Federal District, the governor of Brasilia, Agnelo Queiroz, and the TV Bandeirantes Group.”
Brasilia was due to host a MotoGP motorcycling race on September 28, only for the event to be dropped from the 2014 calendar last month. The Brazilian Grand Prix was intended to be one of two new South American events on the 2014 MotoGP calendar alongside the Argentinian Grand Prix in the city of Termas de Río Hondo. Local organisers are now said to be seeking a place on the 2015 calendar.
