Spain's Massot Eyeing Winning Start To Ginetta GT4 SuperCup

Talented Spanish motor racing star Pepe Massot cannot wait for the opening event of the Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup season to begin at Brands Hatch in Kent this weekend, 29th/30th March, where he aims to get his championship campaign in the rebranded series off to a successful start.Driving for last year’s title-winning team JHR Developments, with whom he contested the final few races of the 2013 season, the 18-year-old from Barcelona goes into his second full year in the popular British Touring Car Championship support category as one of the undoubted front-runners, having won two races and taken seven other podiums last season.Currently residing in Sheffield, quite literally just down the road from the JHR workshop in Dronfield, the Spanish racer is determined to put together a consistent championship bid at the wheel of his Simula Racing-backed Ginetta G55, starting with podium glory at Brands Hatch on Saturday.“We’ve been working really hard to prepare as well as possible for the new season, the guys at JHR are great and I’m sure we’re going to have a really strong year”, said Massot, “Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup is a strong championship, with a lot of experienced guys at the front, so it will be a very tough season.“My mechanics Liam and Jamie, and engineer Nick Hart, have done a fantastic job with my car and we have a really competitive package. It’s going to be a big weekend for Liam, he and his partner are expecting a baby so hopefully we can be on the podium at Brands to help celebrate!”Making a huge impact on his car racing debut in the Ginetta Junior Championship in 2012, his first full season in any form of motorsport, the young Spaniard stunned the paddock with two race wins and five other podiums on his way to an impressive fourth overall in the championship.Stepping up from the Ginetta G40 ‘Junior’ car into the vastly more powerful 370bhp Ginetta G55 last year in the GT4 SuperCup, Massot continued his remarkable progress and underlined his sheer raw speed and natural ability with victories on the first two weekends. While currently focusing on sportscars, Massot does retain a desire to make a move across into single-seater racing if the required budget can be secured and, to that end, he did embark on some test outings in open-wheeled cars over the winter.“We need more sponsorship if we are going to try and move into single-seaters, we worked hard on that but the budget we need is really big and we couldn’t make it happen this year”, he added, “My focus for now, though, is on the Ginetta GT4 SuperCup and aiming to do as well as we can.”Massot’s first officially timed track outing of 2014 will come this Friday, 28th March during pre-event practice at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit ahead of qualifying and the opening round of the new Michelin Ginetta GT4 SuperCup season on Saturday, 29th March. Rounds two and three will follow on Sunday, 30th March, with the first of the day’s races expected to be screened on ITV4 and ITV4 HD in the UK.
