Lando Norris shows promise in first Ginetta Junior Championship Race

ADD Motorsports driver Lando Norris needed little time to find his feet in his first Ginetta Junior Championship race.

Despite being one of the youngest and least experienced drivers on the grid, the 14-year-old finished 6th and 10th in the two races held at Brands Hatch – leaving him well poised in 7th place overall.

But despite making a few mistakes that took the shine off the weekend for him, he showed electric pace and plenty of promise.

And the Glastonbury racer says he is aiming for podiums as the championship progresses.

He said: “It took a bit of getting used to, but I really enjoyed it.

“I was a bit disappointed to make the silly mistakes that cost me places, but overall I’m happy with my first Ginetta race.

“There’s more going on around you and you need a lot more control, but the pace was there all weekend.

“With more experience we hope to do a lot better.”

Lando got better the longer he spent on the track and after ending up in ninth in the warm-up, he found space and pace to finish third in qualifying.

He started Race 1 in third and although he got a good start, dropped back to eighth. But he finished strongly to finish sixth with the third fastest time.

Race 2 was the following day and took place without a warm-up.

Again Lando started in third place and had caught up with the driver in front when an accident behind saw the safety car come into play.

A few laps after the restart, Lando took a corner too wide and was pushed into the gravel, seeing him drop all the way back to 15th.

He managed to get back into 7th before locking the rears going into a corner and spinning, leaving him in 12th.

But again, Lando showed his pace to get back at the drivers in front – and although disappointed to have made a couple of mistakes was happy to finish 10th after what had happened earlier.

He added: “It was really enjoyable, the mistakes were totally my fault, but these things happen.

“I have a few days testing before the next race, so the aim is to get a bit more experience and then I’m looking for Top 3s at least.

“It’s a new challenge but really exciting.”
