V8 Ute Racer Andrew “Fishtail” Fisher will need knee surgery prior to the next V8 Ute Series round, after being diagnosed with a large Meniscal tear.
The New South Welshman has had knee issues for some time and, after being advised by his Physiotherapist, went for an MRI scan only days ago, resulting in the devastating results.
“I have to stop running, which is the hard thing for me as it’s something I love to do. I’m traveling for the next seven weeks so it’s really finding the time to have the surgery and recovery time. My Physio has been great, he is getting me through this period and will be there for the recovery process as well,” said Fisher.
Fisher is expecting a recovery time of about 6 weeks and hoping to be back on light rehabilitation within 2 -3 weeks.
“I should be able to get into the pool within the first 2 -3 weeks and then hopefully back into full-training within 6 weeks,” he explained.
The Jesus Racing driver hasn’t missed a round since starting in the series in 2007. The injury shouldn’t affect his driving as he looks forward to the upcoming round in Perth in May.
“We had a test day on the weekend to see how my leg was holding up, but it only really hurts when my leg is bent for long periods of time. Seeing it’s my right leg, I shouldn’t have a reason to bend it whilst I’m driving, it should be all the way down on the pedal!”
Fisher will be looking to improve on last year’s overall result of 23rd. His best result at Barbagallo Raceway was 6th overall for the Round and 6th in races in 2008 and 2012, and is looking to improve on that result this year.
“I’m really looking forward to Perth, it shouldn’t be too much of a challenge. Steve and Jenni Dunkley are one of Jesus Racings key supporters and they live in Perth, so thankfully I won’t miss the round,” said Fisher.
Team Manager, Luke Sieders, is thankful that Fisher won’t compromise his series chances.
“He’s got great speed and has been close to the championship in the past, so it’s good to hear this won’t affect his Series campaign,” said Luke.
Fisher is currently sitting in 8th overall for the Series, teammate David Sieders has a comfortable lead in the ARMOR ALL Drivers Championship on 131 points, Craig Dontas is in 2nd on 114 and Wayne Wakefield and Kris Walton are on equal third on 109 points.
The next round of the Australian V8 Ute Racing Series will be held at Barbagallo Raceway at the Perth 400, 14 – 16 May.
