Race winning Motionsport and KBS F4 teams announce merger

The Motionsport and KBS F4 teams have confirmed they will merge for the 2014 season.

The outfit, to be initially known as KBS Motionsport, claimed a combined four race wins in the 2013 F4 season with Ross Gunn and James Fletcher, and will run two cars in 2014.

The team will benefit from the broad experience of team principals Simon Phillips and Kelvin Burt, with Phillips the mastermind behind Motionsport’s success in endurance GT racing, while Burt requires little introduction as a former champion in both British F3 and British GT and a race winner during the British Touring Car Championship’s heyday in the 1990s.

Motionsport was founded by Phillips in 2010 and enjoyed instant success in Britcar, winning their class in the Production GTN category at their first attempt in 2011, while also tasting success in the 24 Hours of Barcelona, 24 Hours of Dubai and 12 Hours of Bathurst. The team expanded to single seaters in F4 for 2013, and scored two wins at Oulton Park and on the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit with Ross Gunn.

Aside from his own racing career which also saw him act as an F1 test driver for the Jordan and Arrows teams, Kelvin Burt is a highly respected driver coach and worked for many of the UK’s top teams and drivers before establishing Team KBS to run in F4 in 2013. The team scored two wins with James Fletcher at the Snetterton rounds in June and September, as well as securing several additional podium finishes, benefiting from Burt’s extensive knowledge of UK circuits and single seaters.

Simon Phillips commented: "It makes massive amounts of commercial and competitive sense to join our Formula 4 efforts with KBS. Kelvin has obviously got bags of experience and knowledge in this field both as a team manager and also as a driver coach. As a larger team we're able to have some pretty interesting commercial talks that will add benefits as we move forwards"

Kelvin Burt added: "It’s important to us to build a competitive team and continue to seek out the best possible drivers. F4 is shaping up to be extremely fierce this year and with our combined skills on and off the track we should be well placed to get to the front"

The KBS Motionsport team currently has two seats available for the 2014 F4 season. Interested drivers should contact Simon Phillips on 07970 518968 or Kelvin Burt on 07803 020672. For more information on the BRDC F4 Championship, visit www.formula4.com.
