Following a consistent start to his maiden season as a Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship driver a fortnight ago, Handy Motorsport’s Simon Belcher is aiming to up the ante at Donington Park over Easter weekend, 19th/20th April, when rounds four, five and six of the campaign take place.Bowled over by the experience of lining-up on the BTCC grid for the first time at Brands Hatch during the championship curtain-raiser at the end of March, the Swindon racing driver was very happy with the overall level of performance produced – and is determined to make further strides at Donington.Eager to break into the top 20 for the first time at the weekend, Belcher is certain the knowledge gained during the first three races of 2014 can be converted into greater pace in his Toyota Avensis as he strives to work his way up the grid.As well as the racing, the Wiltshire driver will also be taking part in the ‘official’ BTCC Drivers Party on the Saturday evening at Donington Park Exhibition Centre where top indie rock band Scouting For Girls, and support act Ferris, will be performing live sets.“I can’t wait to be back in the car, as soon as race three at Brands had finished I wanted to get back out there”, said the KÄRCHER-supported racer, “The first weekend was everything I expected and more, it was an incredible experience and I was delighted we managed to bring the car home in all three races without any damage.“This year is all about learning and understanding the Toyota, so it’s vital we finish races and avoid taking any unnecessary risks. That doesn’t mean we’re not trying our best, but getting as much track time as possible is essential. I’m looking forward to the Drivers Party too, should be fun!”While the pre-season Media Day and officially timed test at Donington was affected by rainfall, the outing in mid-March did at least give Belcher some useful experience of the circuit at the wheel of his Avensis. The 2012 and 2013 Renault UK Clio Cup ‘Masters Cup’ title winner is sure of continued improvement at the weekend and with more than 30 cars expected on the grid at the Leicestershire venue’s 1.96-mile National Circuit, the action will be as hotly-contested as ever.“Unfortunately we didn’t get too much dry running during the Media Day, and none on new tyres, so getting a good, trouble-free run in the two free practice sessions on Saturday will be vital to try and find an optimum set-up”, said Belcher, “While the aim is still the same as Brands, to bag three race finishes, I’m determined to break into the top 20 and I’m confident we’ll have a good chance.”Free practice for the BTCC drivers will take place at 10.00 and 12.30 on Saturday, 19th April, with qualifying – which will be streamed live at the www.itv.com/btcc website - following at 15.40. On Easter Sunday, 20th April, round four will get underway at approximately 11.35 with round five taking place at around 14.25 and round six concluding the day’s racing at 17.15.All three encounters will be screened live on Freeview, digital satellite and cable channels ITV4 and ITV4 HD, with the addition of live online streaming at the ITV website.
