Fresh from a series of positive test sessions and a winter of intense physical training, Netherton racing driver Josh Caygill is confident of making a competitive start to the Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup when the UK-based championship gets underway on Easter Monday, 21st April.Rounds one and two of the new season will take place at the 24-year-old’s ‘home’ track, Oulton Park International Circuit, and after an impressive maiden season in cars last year the AWM Motorsport driver is confident of a consistently strong bid from the outset.Running a dual campaign this year, racing in the pan-European Volkswagen Scirocco R Cup as well as the VW Racing Cup, Caygill is set for an incredibly busy 2014 and is absolutely relishing the challenge which awaits him at the wheel of his VW Scirocco.“It’s been a positive winter for me and my career for sure”, said the West Yorkshireman, “It’s been my first full winter working under the management of Tim Sugden [professional sportscar racer] and together we have been working hard to try and improve everything both on and off track, getting my driving to the standard it needs to be.“I completed a successful shakedown with AWM at Oulton a couple of weeks ago and then we had a run at Rockingham which went well, so I’m happy with how the preparations have been going. It’s been a busy winter but we have taken every step to prepare body and mind – physically I’m in great shape so can’t wait for the racing to start.”With a capacity grid of 34 cars set to line-up for the weekend’s VW Racing Cup curtain-raiser at the picturesque Oulton Park, a record entry for the series, competition will be fierce. Among the drivers contesting the series will be four returning champions, including AWM team principal Aaron Mason, and two racers with past British Touring Car Championship experience.“We’re in a new car for this year so there’s going to be a lot to learn”, added Caygill, “The grid in this year’s VW Cup looks very competitive to say the least and the championship won’t be easy. But with a great team around me, and a solid winter’s work under our belts, I’ll be there giving it my all and looking to get the season off to a positive start.“I have to say a huge thank you to everyone who never stops working behind the scenes to get me out on track. It’s a real privilege to have such a great depth of family, friends and fantastic sponsors around me to support everything I’m trying to achieve all the way.”Qualifying for the opening round of the Milltek Sport Volkswagen Racing Cup will take place at 09.50 on Easter Monday, 21st April, with race one of the 2014 season beginning at 14.00 and race two set to get underway at 18.05. In the meantime, Josh is this week testing his Volkswagen Scirocco R Cup car at Oschersleben in Germany.
